Getting back on track.

Maximum performance with minimal time loss is especially important in Formula One™, where a tenth of a second can be the difference between success and defeat. By replacing a data offloading system that required a car-to-computer plug-in connection with a faster, more efficient, wireless solution for data transfer, the drivers can spend more time on-track where the performance gains can be found.

 

In 2016 Pre-Season Testing, the car managed over 6,000km on track, which is equivalent to the entire race distance of all 21 Grand Prix.

MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS and Qualcomm Technologies worked together to create a faster, more technologically advanced data offloading system, which would be a first in motorsports. Using Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 805 processors and Qualcomm® VIVE™ 802.11ac Wi-Fi chipsets, the car's telematics, or performance data, can be transmitted quickly and wirelessly to the race team during pre-season testing and in-season practice sessions. This solution allows the car to spend more time on the track, unplugged — creating more potential opportunities to improve race speed and efficiency.

Meet racing’s newest stars.

The telematics process: Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processors quickly collect the car's performance data, and VIVE transmits it wirelessly to the race team via the 5 GHz Wi-Fi spectrum - all in an effort to keep the drivers racing towards a win. Through this project, we have learned new ways in which we could use Wi-Fi in the automotive environment, and this will impact automotive technologies such as Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications.
