Snapdragon processor powers Lenovo device featuring Project Tango

At CES this week, Lenovo took the wraps off of the first consumer mobile device to feature Google’s Project Tango, a technology platform that created huge buzz when it was unveiled, because of the new experiences it delivers.

Under the hood of this device is none other than the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, engineered to give the device a complete blend of technologies, including superior CPU, DSP, ISP, and sensor capabilities.

Lenovo threw a huge launch party where a full room of guests heard Jeff Meredith, GM and VP of Lenovo’s tablet business, and Johnny Lee, Project Tango lead at Google, talk about some of the potential experiences that the device will bring to users. In addition, the Project Tango team and Lenovo announced an app incubator program where selected developers will have an opportunity to have their app development supported by Google and be featured on the Lenovo device. 

So what is Project Tango?

The Google technology platform uses advanced computer vision, depth sensing, and motion tracking to create on-screen 3D experiences, allowing users to explore their physical environments via their device. Specialized hardware and software combine to let the device react to every movement of the user— when they move forward, backward, or side to side. App developers can transform your home into a game level, or create a magic window into virtual and augmented environments.

Project Tango–enabled devices can recognize places they’ve been before, like your living room, the office, or public spaces. Unlike GPS, Project Tango tracking works indoors, allowing users to navigate precisely through a shopping mall, or even find a specific item at the store when that information is available. Using their built-in sensors, Project Tango devices can also capture the 3D measurements of a room, which can help you when you’re shopping for furniture or decorations. All of this is made possible through a collection of Google Tango APIs and hardware made up of cameras and depth sensors. 

Qualcomm Technologies is a key enabler, engineering the technologies, performance, and battery life inside the powerful Snapdragon processor. And Project Tango is coming to life and into the mainstream, thanks to the tight collaboration among these three companies. The device is expected to be available this summer—learn more at the Lenovo Project Tango site.
