Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. today announced the company’s collaboration efforts with a broad range of companies in China to showcase the complete ecosystem with cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) at the core, accelerating industry development and commercialization at scale. Together with over 100 automotive and technology companies in China, Qualcomm Technologies recently participated in China’s 2020 C-V2X Cross-industry & Large-scale Pilot Plugfest, objectively testing and demonstrating performance and reliability of C-V2X in large-scale communication scenarios and exploring performance of this technology in conjunction with map and positioning technologies.
Over 40 automakers, 40+ terminal manufacturers, 10+ chipset solution vendors, 20+ information security vendors, 5 map providers and 5 position vendors took part in this Cross-Industry Interoperability Demonstration and C-V2X Large-scale Capacity Test. Building on the C-V2X Interoperability Demonstration in 2019, the C-V2X Cross-industry Interoperability Demonstration across chip modules, terminals, vehicles, security platforms and map providers used new digital certificate formats, added high-definition maps and positioning, and deployed continuous scenarios closer to reality and commercially oriented applications.
As a key highlight in this year’s event, the serviceability of C-V2X products and systems in deployments at scale was validated in the C-V2X Large-scale Capacity Test based on the interoperability and security mechanism validation already achieved in the previous C-V2X interoperability work. With this, the industry has taken important steps to C-V2X commercialization at scale. A total of 180 C-V2X onboard units (OBUs) and roadside units (RSUs) were used as a test background to emulate complex conditions such as rush hour in urban areas and congested roads. In this test, the C-V2X communication performance and application function tests on chip modules, terminals and vehicles in various application scenarios validated the large-scale serviceability of the C-V2X system.
Most of tested vehicles and OBUs were equipped with the Qualcomm® 9150 C-V2X chipset solution. The tests are also featured with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ Automotive 4G Platform, supporting stable connectivity. Through the direct vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, 4G or 5G wireless wide area network (WWAN) vehicle-to-network (V2N) connectivity, the Snapdragon Automotive 4G/5G Platforms with integrated C-V2X technology and high-definition positioning help improve road safety and traffic efficiency to ease congestion and increase capacity, supporting C-V2X commercialization at scale.
The five V2I use cases in the interoperability demonstration include: In-Vehicle Signage, Traffic Light Information Push / Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory, Security Mechanism Demo, Vulnerable Road User Collision Warning, and Front Construction Reminder. The tests also included five V2V use cases: Forward Collision Warning, Emergency Vehicle Avoidance, Abnormal Vehicle Warning, Blind Spot Warning/Left Turn Assistant, and Traffic Jam Warning in Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) scenarios, under the assistance of high-definition map and positioning capabilities.
“Cross-industry collaboration is essential to C-V2X commercialization at scale. Last year, China Mobile Research Institute, together with many companies including Qualcomm Technologies completed validation of C-V2X certificate security provisioning capabilities and realized converged application of operator network security capabilities to the automotive industry,” said Li Su, deputy director, Department of Security Technology Research, China Mobile Research Institute. “We’re pleased to further deepen our cooperation with Qualcomm Technologies, witness the industry ecosystem to improve continuously, drive the development of China’s C-V2X industry and contribute to the national automotive industry development strategy.”
“The automotive industry, driven by C-V2X technology, is innovating and evolving at an unprecedented pace, and the future of smart transportation and cities is already unfolding with the maturing technology and industry ecosystem,” said Dr. Yizhi Wang, co-founder and technology R&D vice president, Nebula Link. “Nebula Link is thrilled to offer system support for C-V2X communication and function tests under the background of large-scale communication units. We hope to join hands with a wider range of industry chain companies, including Qualcomm Technologies, to accelerate the commercialization of C-V2X.”
“As advanced technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet, 5G and V2X are constantly improving, automakers have more demanding requirements for intelligent connectivity and smart driving.” said Ying Zhang, director of R&D Center, Great Wall Motors. “Last year, we forged a relationship with Qualcomm Technologies in 5G. We will adopt Snapdragon Automotive 5G Platform in our latest cars in the future, bring 5G technology to intelligent connected transportation and smart cars, and drive rapid growth of the C-V2X industry and commercialization at scale.”
“Today, 5G is empowering the automotive industry, expanding the set of application, and driving the C-V2X industry ecosystem to scale in China. Meanwhile, the solid foundation of the information and communication industry has also paved the way for C-V2X commercialization and implementation in China,” said Jim Misener, senior director, product management and global V2X ecosystem lead, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Qualcomm Technologies is excited to participate in China’s C-V2X application demonstration for three consecutive years, team up with a broad range of Chinese automotive ecosystem vendors to accelerate commercial C-V2X rollouts with our breakthrough product portfolio, and usher in a new era of intelligent connected vehicles for road safety and traffic efficiency.”
