OnePlus recently announced its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 5, and declared that “with this new device, OnePlus is further demonstrating its mission to share the best technology with the world.”

Each OnePlus smartphone generation has looked cooler and sleeker than the one before. Like most innovative phone makers, their latest device takes better photos, charges faster, and feels better in your hands than the previous generation. But there’s more to each generation than meets the eye. Under the hood there’s a slew of breakthrough wireless technologies that help improve the user’s connected experience advancements that are literally invisible.

The OnePlus 5 is among the first smartphones from China to implement advanced RF features like Qualcomm TruSignal with carrier aggregation, and envelope tracking, engineered to improve data speeds, coverage, battery life, call quality, and call reliability. Let’s take a look at how this happens.

Intelligent antenna tuning

Signal conditions around a device are constantly changing due to several factors, including how you hold your phone, distance from the cell tower, carrier fading, number of carriers, and reflections from buildings. TruSignal technology is implemented with a dynamic antenna impedance tuner and aperture tuners that work in concert with the integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon LTE modem to dynamically adapt to changing signal conditions for superior signal strength and a power-efficient connection.

TruSignal also uses new techniques to make the most of a carrier aggregation connection. A better and more consistent signal results in faster data speeds, improved indoor and outdoor coverage, and a smoother connected experience, whether it’s with voice or data. A more efficient connection has the added advantage of improving battery life.

Envelope tracking for long battery life

It’s likely that you’ll be uploading a lot of photos and videos from your new OnePlus 5. Sending a signal from your device to the cell tower consumes power. Envelope tracking technology is designed for superior uplink power efficiency to help extend your battery charge. The envelope tracker is a chip (QET4100) that is designed to work intelligently with the modem to minimize wasted power, resulting in an up-to 30 percent improvement in RF power efficiency, when compared to a similar design with another commonly found power-tracking technology called ‘average power tracking.’

The OnePlus 5 tops it off by supporting as many as 34 LTE bands in all major cellular modes in a single global design.

Kudos to OnePlus 5 for striving to improve consumer experience with sophisticated RF technologies.
