Can the Internet of Things save a life?

That’s the challenge the inventors will face in the new season of the Qualcomm #WhyWait Invent-Off, which is back and bigger than ever.

Season 1’s inventors impressed us with their ideas and ingenuity. Our goal with Season 2, premiering August 2016, isn’t simply to replicate their success. This year, we’re challenging the inventors to take the Internet of Things (IoT) to a whole new level.

The challenge? Use the IoT to save a life. We want to demonstrate how an ecosystem of connected things and people can make a positive impact on the world.

Creating lifesaving innovations isn’t easy, so this year we’re introducing captains to the teams – captains who will lend their unique expertise and guidance. One team will be led by Make magazine’s Executive Editor, Mike Senese, and the other will be captained by Ian Ingram, an artist and technologist. Both Senese and Ingram handpicked their team members from the talented crop of coders, engineers, and makers that applied to be a part of Season 2.

This year, each team will have the newly released Dragonboard 410c, which provides advanced processing power, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, and GPS — all packed into a board the size of a credit card. It’s the perfect tool to help the teams to harness the power of the IoT.

They will also be equipped with a developer’s tool kit, consisting of all things IoT: sensors, cameras, speakers, LCDs, linker modules, and a smartphone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

And to top it all off, we’re excited to announce that Andrew Fried, producer, creator, and director of the documentary series “Chef’s Table” and “Iconoclasts,” will bring his unique vision to the show as director. His goal is to show the world the art and process of invention.

The #WhyWait Invent-Off competition is about great minds and inventors working together to accelerate innovation and inspire progress. In a way, it’s a microcosm of what Qualcomm does every day. It’s our passion, and putting it out there — front and center — is exciting for us. Being able to do so with a chance to help the society and save lives makes it that much more significant.

Follow the show’s progress starting this week on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and catch up on Season 1 at Qualcomm.com/Inventoff.
