What you should know:
  • AI-enhanced antenna management for 5G smartphones is a significant milestone in the evolution of mobile connectivity.
  • Building on our leadership in wireless innovation, we have set a new standard for throughput, network capacity and end-user experience.
  • Looking ahead, the integration of AI-driven predictive context-aware network selection can further enhance real-time decision-making, leading to a more efficient, personalized and engaging experience.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of 5G technology, superior end-user experiences and enhanced connectivity performance is paramount. Qualcomm Technologies has taken a significant step forward with the introduction of AI-enhanced 6 antenna management for 5G smartphones in 2024. This innovative technology leverages six antennas to significantly improve throughput, network capacity and overall user experience.

What is 6Rx antenna management?

The core of this technology lies in the use of six receive antennas, which dynamically manage signal reception to optimize RF performance. This approach addresses the challenges of maintaining high throughput and low latency, especially in challenging environments such as cell edges. By using 6 receive antennas in mid/high 5G bands, the user can experience higher spectral efficiency, better diversity gains and interference rejection gains, compared to the traditional 4Rx smartphones. Qualcomm Technologies’ AI-enhanced solution will select 6 Rx mode intelligently based on application and traffic type and radio conditions, delivering 6Rx benefits without impacting the smartphone battery life.

How does 6Rx antenna management improve performance?

  1. Up to 20% improvement in downlink throughput at the cell edge: Field tests have demonstrated that AI-enhanced 6Rx antenna management can boost downlink throughput by up to 20% at the cell edge. This is particularly significant for users in areas with weaker signal strength, where traditional antenna systems often struggle to maintain high data rates.
  2. Increase of 20% for network capacity: This technology also enhances network capacity by up to 20%, depending on the penetration of 6Rx devices. This improvement is crucial for network operators looking to support a growing number of connected devices without compromising performance.

Field test results using the 6Rx configuration

Field tests conducted with the Snapdragon X80 Modem-RF System device have shown significant improvements in various use cases:

  1. Video Streaming: Users have experienced smoother video streaming in areas with weak signal strength, in terms of reduced stuck duration, increased frame rate and/or reduced latency.
  2. Gaming: This technology can reduce the worst-case latency of data packets when smartphones are in challenging RF environments such as a subway, or when players’ hands block some of the antennas, providing a more immersive and responsive gaming experience.
  3. Voice Calls: Voice calls have become clearer and more reliable, with reduced drop rates and improved call quality in weak signal areas.

6Rx advancements from Snapdragon X80 to Qualcomm X85 5G Modem

The Snapdragon X80 5G modem introduced the first generation 6Rx support by a Qualcomm Technologies’ modem. The newly launched Qualcomm X85 5G Modem-RF solution builds on Snapdragon X80 improvements, further enhancing throughput and network capacity, particularly at the cell edge, and bringing several key advancements:

  1. Multi-SIM capabilities: Adding 6Rx support in MSIM mode which provides more flexibility and enhances user experience.
  2. Improved carrier aggregation support: Expanding 6Rx usage in carrier aggregation mode with up to 3 carriers on downlink.
  3. Extending traffic types: Introducing more flexibility to accommodate more traffic types and/or applications for 6Rx, such as OTT voice.
  4. Allowing uplink to benefit from 6 antennas: Allowing switching Tx antennas among 6 antennas that would mitigate hand-blocking performance impact.

AI-enhanced 6Rx antenna management for 5G smartphones is a significant milestone in the evolution of mobile connectivity. By leveraging six antennas and advanced AI processing, Qualcomm Technologies has set a new standard for throughput, network capacity and end-user experience. The advancements from the first generation of 6Rx with the Snapdragon X80 to the second generation with the Qualcomm X85 5G Modem-RF underscores the company's commitment to innovation and its dedication to delivering superior 5G performance. As 5G technology continues to evolve, these enhancements will play a crucial role in shaping the future of mobile communications.
