Qualcomm hosted CNBC for two days during which they interviewed our President & CEO Cristiano Amon and Senior Vice President & GM, Mobile Handset (Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.), Chris Patrick, and were given access to various labs for a behind the scenes look into the design and testing of Qualcomm Technologies’ chipsets that find their way into smartphones, headsets, computers, wearables and cars. The conversation was broad, but it started with a history lesson before digging into our growth strategy to diversify beyond mobile, our bet that generative AI will be in high demand on device and more.
AI expert analysis and more
As part of their story, CNBC interviewed key industry analysts who spoke to Qualcomm’s leadership.
When it came to betting on Qualcomm, Futurum Group CEO Dan Newman said,
And on the growth of the automotive business, Newman added, "That's something that's taking time but these design wins are indicative of a future, they do create more predictability and revenue. And the company is seeing more and more of the world's largest automakers select its technology for at least part of their automated connected automotive stack."
D2D Advisory Investment Partner Jay Goldberg commented on the compute opportunity, adding,
And when on the artificial intelligence (AI) opportunity, Newman added, “The company's biggest opportunities is to figure out what are those AI applications, whether it's tied to augmented reality, whether it's tied to intelligent vehicles, whether it's tied to next generation gaming, whether it's tied to productivity tools and apps. Its ability to put chipsets into these devices that can handle and process those different workloads. And of course, being able to monetize that.”
Qualcomm leadership on diversification
Amon and Patrick discussed a wide range of topics including AI, automotive, augmented reality (AR) and more:
Regarding our deep history with AI, Amon said,
And on the opportunity for on-device AI, he added “You’re running massive amount of computation in a data center for every word that is generated. I think we have a very unique capability to run those models locally. And not only do you improve performance, but you significantly improve cost.”
When it came to the automotive opportunity, he commented, “That's our brightest spot in our Qualcomm differentiation strategy. In a period of I'll say, three to four years, we have significantly increased our presence.”
Adding that AR is the next computing platform:
“At the end, in the heart of the products that you love, that you use every day, there is a very good chance that Qualcomm is at the center of it,” Patrick said about our leadership. He added, “We've taken all these technologies that we've built, and we apply it not just to mobile phones but to VR headsets, to AR headsets, to computing, to automotive.”
