Sharp AQUOS R6 Features a massive 1-inch camera image sensor and massive ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

Meet the world’s first smartphone with the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max

Today Sharp introduced the Sharp AQUOS R6 powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform and it has two big features you won’t find in any other smartphone available. The camera features a gigantic 1-inch image sensor that captures stunning professional quality photos, while under the display, it packs the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max – our largest (20x30mm2) and fingerprint sensor based on ultrasonic technology. The Sharp AQUOS R6 is the first smartphone to feature Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max.

Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max

The CES 2021 Innovation Award-winning Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max is 17x bigger than the original Qualcomm 3D Sonic and 9x bigger than the Gen 2 sensor. Thanks to the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max, you have a big region to place your finger on the Sharp AQUOS R6’s Pro IGZO OLED, helping to make unlocking fast and easy. In addition, it enables advanced security features and experiences including the ability to read two fingerprints simultaneously and to register one’s fingerprint with a single tap.

Qualcomm 3D Sonic sensors deliver a better user experience by using technological advances and acoustics (ultrasonic waves) to scan 3D features. It can capture your finger’s ridges, valleys and pores to generate a deeply accurate 3D image. This allows the Qualcomm 3D Sonic sensor to scan fingerprints through the AQUOS R6 display even when your fingers are wet.

Qualcomm Spectra 580 ISP powers a 1-inch sensor for professional-quality camera experience.

The Sharp AQUOS R6 will also capture professional quality images. The camera image sensor is massive. Generally speaking, the larger the sensor and its pixels, the better the image quality. Popular smartphones feature image sensors that measure anywhere from 0.4 to 0.8 inches (diagonally.) The Sharp AQUOS R6 features a gigantic 1-inch image sensor – the largest sensor size in a commercially available smartphone. This is a sensor size more commonly found in traditional high-end digital cameras.

It also has enormous pixels for collecting lots of light and color. Common pixel sizes in many other smartphone image sensors can measure between 0.8um and 1.4um in size. The pixels in this 1-inch sensor measure 2.4um in size. Compared to 1.4um pixels, these 2.4um pixels can collect 194% more light. Compared to 0.8um, 2.4um pixels can collect 800% more light! These larger pixels capture better light information that is rich in color and has less noise. This data is then processed by the Qualcomm Spectra 580 to create a stunning professional quality photo.

The Sharp AQUOS R6 is expected to be available around the Middle of June.
