Snapdragon 808 based device is first Rezence-certified wireless charging smartphone

On the heels of the recent announcement that Qualcomm WiPower wireless charging technology enables wireless charging on devices with metal backs comes another breakthrough. This month, Qualcomm Technologies became the first member company of the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) to receive certification on a smartphone, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor based Mobile Test Platform (MTP), making it the first such device to reach this milestone.

The MTP, a proven reference design, built by Qualcomm Technologies, is a fully functional smartphone used by handset manufacturers, operators and developers to help implement and verify the most advanced features available on Snapdragon, including WiPower technology.

The MTP wireless power receiver is fully embedded within the smartphone, and all components fit in a compact area on the main board. The embedded design has an advantage over devices with back cover implementation by supporting higher power delivery (in this case up to 6.5 watts), while still meeting the charge time and touch temperature requirements for commercial designs set by OEMs.

The embedded implementation also uses the Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174A on-board connectivity IC for A4WP signaling purposes. It does not require an additional connectivity IC solely for A4WP signaling, further reducing the footprint of the solution on the main board of the phone.

“Having an embedded smartphone certified by A4WP is a milestone that can allow OEMs to work with a proven reference design to add resonant wireless charging to their own commercial products,” said Steve Pazol, General Manager, wireless power, Qualcomm Incorporated. “This breakthrough is not only key to bringing WiPower to consumers, but helps build the A4WP ecosystem and better position it as the de facto resonant wireless charging standard.”

WiPower, based on the principal of magnetic resonance, allows for greater freedom and flexibility in wireless charging. From the ability to charge multiple devices with different power requirements on the same charge surface, at the same time, to being able to charge through distance, WiPower is designed to better meet the needs of consumers and the industry for convenient, no hassle wireless charging.

Qualcomm Technologies continues to innovate new advancements in wireless charging. With over 30 years of driving the evolution of wireless technology, Qualcomm Technologies is once again proving itself a leader in moving a new technology forward.
