Google announces Snapdragon powered Nexus 5X and 6P

Google has announced two new and improved versions of its flagship Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 phones: the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P.  Both are powered by premium-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon processors: the Nexus 5X is built by LG and powered by a Snapdragon 808, while the Nexus 6P is made by Huawei and features a Snapdragon 810.

Both models will run on the latest Android OS software, version 6.0 (Marshmallow). Each has Nexus Imprint, fingerprint scanning on the rear that works with Android Pay and unlocks the phone. With Context Core, both the Nexus 5X and 6P cameras can launch with two twists of the user’s wrist and display notifications with a nudge. [UPDATE: The feature to launch the camera via double-twist of the device was replaced by double tap of the power key. The name Context Core has been changed to Android Sensor Hub.] And the phones will both work with Google’s Project Fi, which lets devices switch between cell and Wi-Fi signals for seamless phone calls.

The Nexus 5X features a metal frame and plastic back, and is available in charcoal black, icy blue, and quartz white. Its 5.2-inch screen displays snaps taken with the 12.3-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera; the phone offers 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory to store them. Compared to its predecessor, the smartphone has a slightly larger battery capacity, at 2700 mAh.

The Nexus 6P is the first in the Nexus family to have an all-metal body. The 6P has a 5.7-inch display and Quad HD resolution. Snapdragon 810 dual 14-bit image signal processors support a big pixel (1.55um) 12.3-megapixel rear camera sensor with great image and low-light capture quality, high video frame rate, and laser auto focus technology so you can focus with confidence even under low light conditions. And a new “smart burst” feature lets you take multiple photos in succession to make an animated GIF.

The Nexus 6P’s dual front-facing stereo speakers with noise cancellation provide an immersive mobile experience. A 3450 mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, and a choice of 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB internal memory are built in. It is available in aluminum (silver), graphite (black), and frost (white), as well as a gold color choice in Japan.

The Nexus 5X and 6P are available for preorder today in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, and Japan, from the Google Store. For more information, visit the Google Nexus website.
