We can officially say “goodbye” to the NYC payphone, and hello to fast, free Wi-Fi

For nearly 30 years, Qualcomm technologies have driven the evolution of digital communications, linking people more closely to the information they need and want, and to each other. As a leader in Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G technologies, we continue to support initiatives that drive connectivity among communities. We’re excited to begin a new chapter in our mission to reimagine connectivity in today’s cities by helping to make NYC smarter through our participation in CityBridge—the company that was officially chosen by the city to bring the people of NYC the fastest public Internet speeds available.

CityBridge will deliver the Wi-Fi standard that we will expect in 10 years, today, via the LinkNYC network. By replacing the NYC payphones with structures called “Links,” people in all five boroughs will have access to state-of-the-art wireless technology, interactive systems, and digital displays that will provide free public wireless access, free local and emergency calls, all while providing a new revenue stream for NYC through digital advertising. Ever been stuck in the city with low battery on your mobile? The Links also include complimentary charging stations. This approach to accessibility and connectivity is truly ground breaking from the ground up, and is one Qualcomm is looking forward to bringing to life with our CityBridge partners.

If you live in or are visiting NYC, you won’t be able to miss the construction of the LinkNYC network as it begins in 2015. This project is just one piece of the evolution towards creating smart and sustainable solutions for today’s thriving urban environments like NYC.
