Hands on with the Nexus 5 from Google

The high-end hardware specs and stock Android install of the Nexus 5 from Google have gained the flagship phone an eager following, selling out of its initial inventory within days of launching last November. A Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor lays the foundations for excellent performance, while a minimalist body and 5-inch 1080p display lend a crisp overall appearance.

The Nexus 5 includes an 8 MP rear camera, with HDR+ mode for more vivid images, and PhotoSphere, which lets you capture 360-degree images. Automatic voice search means that no tapping or swiping into Google Now is required: simply utter the phrase ‘OK, Google’ for the Nexus 5 to kick into action. A smart dialer automatically updates the most frequently called numbers and doubles as a GPS-powered search function, finding nearby locations when a company name or venue type is entered.

To see what initial reviewers said about the Nexus 5’s versatility and performance, read on:

  • “The handset is powered by a quad-core 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor (the same blazingly fast CPU seen in the LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3), and a 450MHz Adreno 330 GPU. With these specs, the Nexus 5 is a powerhouse…” -- CNet
  • “Needless to say, the Nexus packs as much power as you can possibly get on a smartphone these days, and Google has an advantage over other manufacturers by being the first to optimize its own device on KitKat, which means this thing absolutely flies on Android 4.4.” -- Engadget
  • ”This is one fast phone, with smooth animations, task switching, and scrolling..” -- PC Mag
  • “Key specs include a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM, and they combine with other elements to create an extremely fluid user experience. Jumping from app to app is a breeze, video playback is always smooth, scrolling rarely sticks and the user experience in general is a great one.”  -- BGR
