Samsung added to their growing GALAXY lineup last week, with the release of the GALAXY Mega “phablet,” or smartphone-tablet hybrid.
Samsung’s incredibly popular GALAXY line-up has been steadily receiving new additions all year. The flagship S4 has spawned new variations including a more “rugged” waterproof GALAXY Active, a Google edition with a stock Android OS, the Zoom Edition with a more powerful camera, and an S4 Mini.
The Mega phablet bridges the size gap between tablet and smartphone – perhaps the only remaining hole in Samsung’s GALAXY inventory. With the S4 Mini’s display measuring 4.3 inches, the GALAXY S4 smartphone screen coming in at 5 inches, the GALAXY Note II measuring 5.5 inches, and the GALAXY Tab 3 coming in both 8 and 10.1-inch options, the GALAXY Mega’s 6.3-inch 720x1280 HD display hits that sweet spot right in the middle.
Like its companion gadgets, the GALAXY Mega will utilize Samsung’s popular software and powerful hardware. Air View, Multi Window, S Translator, ChatOn, and WatchOn will all come standard, operating on the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS. It will come with either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, and also include a microSD slot for expandable memory. The GALAXY Mega will run on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that powers the HTC First and HTC Mini.
The GALAXY Mega will initially sell for $149.99 with a two-year contract through AT&T, or for $24/month through AT&T’s Next Plan.
