Smartphone Sales Soar in Emerging Countries

Given all the mind-numbing stats about the massive business opportunities in China, few were surprised by IDC’s recent prediction that the country -- already the world’s largest mobile market -- will continue to gain share.

By 2016, China will account for 20% of smartphone sales, followed by the U.S. (15%), India (9%), Brazil (5%), and the U.K. (4%), IDC predicts.

Within days of the IDC projection, Flurry’s Jason Ankeny reported that China already leads the U.S. in new Apple iOS and Google Android smartphone and tablet activations. Based on the firm's ongoing device tracking studies, Flurry projects that China will account for 24% of total iOS and Android activations this month, with the U.S. trailing at 21%.

This projected growth is music to the ears of device makers. But according to TechCrunch's Ingrid Lundenit’s also an opportunity for network operators and companies developing content.
