4G LTE Advanced continues its growth across South Korea, with LG’s unveiling of the LG G3 Cat.6 (Category 6). The LG G3 Cat.6 features the powerful Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 805 processor and Qualcomm® Gobi™ modem with Cat 6 LTE Advanced support for Broadband LTE Advanced service and carrier aggregation on the phone.
LTE Advanced with carrier aggregation works by allowing one device to receive data on multiple radio channels simultaneously. Practically, that means that if your phone is equipped with carrier aggregation that can receive from two radio channels of the same bandwidth, it can download data at up to twice as fast as a device without carrier aggregation. This LTE Advanced technology in South Korea can reach maximum speeds of 225Mbps by communicating over two radio channels (10MHz and 20 Mhz wide) at once, meaning the LG G3 Cat.6 can download a 1GB movie in as little as 40 seconds under ideal signal conditions. But that’s only in this first phase. As the technology expands, carrier aggregation can potentially support up to five connections to each mobile device, making those 40 seconds seem downright leisurely.
The original LG G3 was already considered the company’s “best phone yet” because of its 538ppi display, beautiful design, and top-tier performance. This Category 6 variant adds LTE Advanced to the already impressive spec list which allows for up to three times faster speed than current 4G LTE devices.
So, let’s say you’re flying from Seoul to New York City with your global LG G3 Cat.6. That’s a 14-hour flight ahead of you, but while waiting to board you’ve just realized you have nothing to occupy your time. With LTE Advanced, the five minutes between when you get to your seat and when the pilot asks you to shut your device down could be more than enough to download the seven Full HD movies required to keep you occupied.
This means that, while at first glance that “Cat.6” moniker might seem to represent a minor addition to an already stellar device, there’s truly a difference that you can feel. Provided your flight is from Seoul to New York and not the other way around, that is.
