Rohde & Schwarz, China’s Academy of Broadcasting Science and Qualcomm to Showcase 5G Broadcast Applications at MWC Barcelona

Demonstrating 5G Emergency Broadcast, Interactive Broadcast and Other Key Services, and Innovative Applications on Mobile Devices for the First Time

Barcelona, February 28, 2023 —— Rohde & Schwarz, Academy of Broadcasting Science (ABS) under China’s National Radio and Television Administration, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.  delivered the world’s first interactive multimedia emergency 5G broadcast demonstration at the Rohde & Schwarz booth [stand: 5A80], MWC Barcelona 2023, highlighting 5G broadcast-enabled key services and innovative applications in emergency broadcast and media convergence communication.

5G broadcast, a broadcast transmission technology compliant with mobile communication standards has the ability to fully unleash various advantages of the broadcast network,  including low latency, broad coverage and efficient delivery, achieve broad coverage of broadcast signals for handsets with high-power high towers at low cost, deliver emergency response messages quickly and efficiently in the case of natural disasters or sudden public crisis, and allow users to enjoy free-to-air (FTA) mobile multimedia services on their handsets at any time. At the same time, with the flexible nature of the mobile communication network and collaboration between 5G broadcast and communication channels, it has the power to deliver intelligent network information interactions and video on demand (VOD) and offer mobile device users with personalized, interactive media convergence experiences.

Using the app developed by ABS and jointly supported by Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Technologies, this technology demonstration showcases 5G interactive multimedia broadcast scenarios in the real world. In the warning stage of major natural disasters and sudden public crisis, the 5G broadcast system can trigger a variety of mobile devices including handsets, and thus achieving fast and effective transmission of emergency broadcast messages; while the mobile device receives emergency notifications in the case of emergencies, the user can also get more interactive user-specific emergency response messages on the app, such as key messages  including the nearest rescue point from the location where the user is. The app also includes radio and TV content in addition to emergency broadcasts so users can directly receive 5G broadcast signals over-the-air transmitted from high-power high towers on smart devices and watch TV programs.

“We are proud to partner with China’s Academy of Broadcasting Science and Qualcomm to showcase more possibilities with 5G broadcast technology to participants at MWC Barcelona and allow them to experience real-world 5G broadcast scenarios,” said Manfred Reitmeier, Vice President of Broadcasting and Amplifier Systems at Rohde & Schwarz. “Network operators and media content providers can deliver content or data to large numbers of consumers with 5G broadcast, without affecting the regular cellular 5G mobile network. This will bring completely new business models and consumer applications.”

“Deploying the 5G broadcast system is of great significance to reconfiguring the radio and TV industrial chain and developing public services in society. The 5G broadcast system deployment helps activate existing transmission resources in the radio and TV sector and expands broadcasting devices and audiences. Coordinated transmission on the 5G broadcast system and 5G communication network can not only offer users with radio and TV programs, but also provide video on demand, live sports, and other services. It enables common and personalized precise content push services using an intelligent recommendation engine technology, drives media development from ‘combination’ to ‘convergence’, and helps build a new type of radio and TV media convergence communication networks.” said Wei Xie, Chief Technology Officer, Academy of Broadcasting Science under China’s National Radio and Television Administration. “In the meantime, 5G broadcast can serve as a new technical means of emergency broadcast and give full play to the public service nature.”

“We’re pleased to participate with ecosystem partners including Rohde & Schwarz, a leading broadcast media technology provider, and China’s Academy of Broadcasting Science, a representative research organization in the radio and TV industry, to showcase 5G broadcast technological innovation achievements,” said Kun Qian, Senior Vice President, Qualcomm International, Inc. and General Manager, Qualcomm Technology Licensing China. “This joint technology demonstration is an important practice that Qualcomm Technologies and partners have kept exploring the value potential of 5G technology and revolutionizing user experiences, and another example that we have remain committed to bringing benefits to users, enabling industries, and benefiting society through 5G technological innovation. In the megatrend of broadcast technology and communication convergence, Qualcomm Technologies will continue to play a leading role in 5G broadcast core technology research, development and standard contribution and work with industry partners to revitalize the radio and TV sector.”
