Qualcomm Collaborates with Red Hat to Redefine Transportation with Linux Support for Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platforms

Companies Aim to Advance the Development and Deployment of Software-Defined Vehicles

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. today announced it is working with Red Hat, a leading provider of open source solutions, to bring functional-safety certified (ASIL-B) Linux-based operating systems to next generation vehicles that utilize Snapdragon® Digital Chassis platforms -- a set of open and scalable cloud-connected platforms designed for automotive telematics and connectivity, digital cockpit, and advanced driver assistance.  Utilizing Red Hat In-Vehcile Operating Systems with Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platforms, automakers may help advance the development of software-defined vehicles, as well as help accelerate the deployment of new cloud connected digital services, creating new opportunities for deeper customer engagement and services-based business models that are designed to be updateable throughout the lifetime of the vehicle via the cloud.  Additionally, automakers will have the opportunity to redefine driving experiences for their customers through seamless connectivity and increased intelligence needed for safer, smarter and more immersive experiences.

As global automakers move toward software-defined designs for their next generation vehicles, integrating industry-proven Linux-based operating systems with highly advanced, high-compute automotive solutions like Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platforms, become increasingly critical to address higher levels of cybersecurity requirements and certifications associated with  privacy and software updates attached to safety applications. With Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platforms utilizing on Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System, automakers will have expanded capabilities to conduct simple and efficient vehicle updates and maintain functional safety.

“The rise of open source, software-defined design and development methodologies for vehicle services and innovation is bolstered by advanced automotive platforms and the flexible Linux-based operating systems underpinning them. These advancements will help enable the latest in-vehicle, cloud-native, mixed-criticality applications while also driving sustainability and quicker development cycles,” said Francis Chow, vice president and general manager, In-Vehicle Operating System and Edge, Red Hat. “We are pleased to be working with Qualcomm Technologies on Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System support for their latest Snapdragon® Automotive chipsets and look forward to working together in ushering in the new era of software-defined vehicles.”

“Software-defined vehicles brings an exciting opportunity for the entire automotive ecosystem to go beyond the current functions of the vehicle,” said Bill Pinnell, vice president, product management, automotive, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Working closely with open-source communities allows us to advance our goals in being able to provide our customers the ability to upgrade functionalities and on-demand experiences, and new technologies and services. We are pleased to be working with Red Hat to help make this happen and look forward to working together to accelerate innovation for next generation vehicles.”

Initial versions of Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms and Snapdragon Ride Platforms with pre-integrated Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating Systems are expected to be available for automotive ecosystem partners to evaluate with beginning in the second half of 2023.
