Qualcomm Announces Fifth-Generation LTE Multimode Modem for Download Speeds of Up to 450 Mbps and Next-Generation Envelope Tracker for Optimized Power Consumption

Qualcomm first to announce commercial LTE Advanced Category 10 modem to offer up to 450 Mbps Downlink 3x Carrier Aggregation and up to 100 Mbps Uplink 2x Carrier Aggregation

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., introduced its fifth-generation LTE multimode solution, the Qualcomm® Gobi 9x45 modem, and its second- generation Qualcomm RF360 Envelope Tracker, the QFE3100.  Designed with leading LTE connectivity, both products are designed to work together to support fast downloads, swift application performance, as well as provide enhanced thermal efficiency and optimized power consumption.  These two new products are currently sampling with customers and are anticipated to be commercially available in 2015.

Incorporating generational enhancements that optimize power consumption and board area, the 9x45 modem is the first announced Category 10 LTE cellular modem that supports global Carrier Aggregation (CA) for download speeds of up to 450 Mbps, upload speeds of up to 100 Mbps, and CA across the TDD and FDD spectrum. The modem is based on the second-generation 20nm technology node and supports up to 60 MHz 3x CA in the downlink and up to 40 MHz 2x CA in the uplink. The 9x45 modem integrates all major cellular standards, including DC-HSPA, EVDO, CDMA 1x, GSM and TD-SCDMA, supports all major RF bands and band combinations, and provides global position support for all major constellations including GPS, Beidou, Glonass and Galileo. Additionally, the modem features integrated support for LTE Broadcast, VoLTE and LTE Dual SIM.

The QFE3100 is optimized for 30% smaller board area and enhanced power efficiency as compared to the previous generation, as well as allows improved calibration and implementation tools to ease Envelope Tracking design-in for OEMs and accelerate commercial deployment. This next-generation Envelope Tracker is designed to enable sleeker designs and improved battery life by reducing power amplifier (PA) power consumption and heat generation. Paired with the 9x45 modem, the QFE3100 is designed to enable the mobile industry’s most advanced system-level modem and RF platform with support for 2G, 3G and 4G cellular modes.

“The expansion of our connectivity solutions to include fifth-generation LTE Category 10 technology, and the QFE3100, will offer consumers more efficient mobile devices that connect seamlessly to the fastest LTE Advanced networks while consuming lower power,” said Cristiano Amon, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and co-president, QCT.  “Today’s announcement builds on our established technology leadership in the LTE connectivity space and demonstrates our continued commitment to offering users an outstanding and unparalleled mobile experience.”

The 9x45 modem is designed to allow operators to maximize use of available spectrum resources, deliver higher user data rates and enjoy greater flexibility in network deployments. The modem will address the industry demand for increased power performance and thinner, more sophisticated designs. Consumers will experience up to 2x faster upload speeds and up to 1.5x faster peak download speeds as compared to LTE Category 6 devices, and faster application response times and improved connectivity throughout the LTE-A coverage area.

For OEMs, the combination of the 9x45 modem and QFE3100 is designed to support premium LTE-Advanced features. These solutions are designed to support faster LTE connectivity for devices in terms of peak and average data rates, while providing superior battery life for cutting-edge devices.
