Qualcomm and FAR EASTONE Sign Non-Binding MOU to Explore Creation of a Broadcast Mobile Media Operator in Taiwan Using MediaFLO Technology

Building on the momentum of MediaFLO™ services in the United States and Japan, Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) today announced it has signed a non-binding MOU with FAR EASTONE to explore the creation of a broadcast mobile media operator using MediaFLO technology in Taiwan. FAR EASTONE is one of the largest mobile network operators in Taiwan, where pay TV penetration has reached over 81 percent.

“We are committed to working with local players to commercialize MediaFLO mobile media services in Taiwan and drive business results for Taiwan’s information and communications technology industry,” said Neville Meijers, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm MediaFLO Technologies. “We are now in discussions with FAR EASTONE to determine the right business model and structure of a possible MediaFLO venture.”

“MediaFLO is a superior platform for rich mobile media services, including live mobile TV, as well as the delivery of real-time datacasting services, interactive advertising, e-publications, games and other multimedia content,” said Roger Chen, vice president of business development and multimedia services for FAR EASTONE. “FAR EASTONE believes Qualcomm’s technology leadership in the mobile entertainment space can help us to grow and diversify our offering for Taiwanese consumers.”

The discussions between Qualcomm and FAR EASTONE come in advance of an anticipated UHF spectrum auction in early 2011, when Taiwan’s regulatory agency, the National Communications Commission, is expected to issue two mobile TV licenses in the market.

The MediaFLO services platform enables the broadcast delivery of high-quality mobile entertainment and information to the mass market. In addition to live mobile TV, the MediaFLO platform supports enhanced mobile broadcast services such as streaming video and audio, clipcasting media, datacasting, interactive applications and targeted advertising – providing a compelling mobile media experience while enabling profitable business models.
