Qualcomm Provides Research Grant to Leading European Technical University Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

— Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), a leading European technical university. According to the agreement, Qualcomm now owns certain intellectual property rights directed to signal processing and will provide a research grant to EPFL. The research grant will enable EPFL to continue its pioneering research and work with Qualcomm to generate research ideas that can ultimately lead to commercial products.

The agreement underscores Qualcomm’s commitment to technology universities and research institutes globally, with a focus on funding academic research. In the past few years, Qualcomm has donated to the University of Cambridge for the ‘Qualcomm Research Studentship in Computing’ and has donated to the formation of a joint research and scholarship program with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

“As an enabler and innovator of wireless technologies, Qualcomm invests a significant portion of its revenue in technology R&D,” said Roberto Padovani, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Qualcomm. “We see investment in academic and research institutions, such as EPFL, as being a key component in translating core technologies into practical solutions and commercial products, and in advancing wireless technology generally.”

“One of EPFL’s central tenets is to engage with leading international technology companies, such as Qualcomm, and generate groundbreaking innovations that eventually can be transformed into commercial products,” said Dr. Martin Vetterli, professor of communication systems and vice president for international affairs of EPFL. “Hence, we are extremely pleased with the execution of this agreement and believe that EPFL and Qualcomm will greatly benefit from this relationship.”

EPFL is one of the two Ecoles Polytechniques Fédérales in Switzerland. It has three missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. In its idyllic location on the shores of Lake Geneva, EPFL brings together a campus of more than 10,000 people. It offers complete programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. levels in engineering, basic sciences, computer and communication sciences, life sciences, civil engineering, architecture and the environment. With more than 250 laboratories and research groups on campus, EPFL is one of Europe’s most innovative and productive technology institutes.
