Qualcomm Co-Founder and Senior Vice President Receives Prestigious Chairman’s Award from the United States Telecommunications Training Institute

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced that Klein Gilhousen, a Qualcomm Fellow and a senior vice president of technology at the Company, was awarded the Chairman's Award by the United States Telecommunications Training Institute (USTTI).

USTTI is a non-profit public-private partnership between leaders of the U.S. communications industry and ranking officials from the federal government providing tuition-free telecommunications and broadcast training to professionals from the developing world.

Each year, USTTI chairman, Ambassador Michael R. Gardner, and the USTTI board of directors, honor an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment and dedication to USTTI's goal of global growth in the developing world through telecommunications training. Gilhousen was chosen as this year's honoree. “Klein Gilhousen typifies the hands-on vigorous commitment of hundreds of USTTI volunteer professors who year-after-year provide the tuition-free communications training that has empowered 7,253 USTTI graduates from 165 developing countries,” said Ambassador Gardner, who will present USTTI's Chairman Award to Gilhousen.

Gilhousen has been an instrumental force behind Qualcomm's collaboration with USTTI and has exhibited leadership in the development and growth of Qualcomm's commitment to wireless communications training initiatives. Through Gilhousen's leadership, Qualcomm joined and became a board member of USTTI in 2004. To date, Qualcomm has provided tuition-free training to 179 individuals from 59 countries.

“We are delighted that Klein has been recognized for his extraordinary efforts and exemplary commitment to USTTI's training,” said William Bold, senior vice president, government affairs for Qualcomm. “Qualcomm's successful partnership with USTTI and Klein's personal involvement in the program as an instructor on the fundamentals of wireless technology exemplifies Qualcomm's commitment to global development through training and education.”

Klein Gilhousen was one of the original seven co-founders of Qualcomm in 1985. He is currently the senior vice president for technology and oversees systems engineering for the Company. Gilhousen holds a number of patents for CDMA technology, including a novel approach to increase the capacity of spread spectrum in both cellular telephone and mobile satellite communications. Gilhousen is a Fellow of the IEEE, is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Burns Technology Center in Bozeman, Mont. and serves as an Ambassador for Montana State University. He also is an advisor to the Montana State Engineering Department. In 2001, he received an honorary Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Montana State University.
