Qualcomm Strengthens Chipset Offerings for Entry-Level WCDMA Handsets

MSM6245 Solution Enables Lower-Cost Handsets to Drive WCDMA Migration

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced a new chipset that enables lower-cost WCDMA handsets with more integrated multimedia features and reduced power consumption. The Value Platform Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) MSM6245™ solution leverages 65 nm CMOS technology and interfaces to the Company's RF CMOS single-chip transceiver and multi-band receiver devices for greater cost-efficiency.

"The expansion of our entry-level product portfolio underscores Qualcomm's commitment to address the needs of the rapidly-growing WCDMA market with feature-rich and cost-effective devices," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "Leading digital and RF process technologies leveraged by the highly-integrated MSM6245 solution enable mobile handsets that meet the demand for lower-cost entry-level handsets and help drive the adoption of WCDMA and 3G technologies - bringing wireless users new wireless capabilities from improved voice quality to cost-effective music downloads."

The MSM6245 solution supports WCDMA Release 99, EDGE, GPRS and GSM networks. Some of the multimedia capabilities integrated into the MSM6245 single-chip baseband include support for:

  • 2 megapixel camera and image processing
  • Video streaming, playback, recording and videotelephony
  • Streaming and playback of popular audio codecs such as MP3, AAC/aacPlus™ and Enhanced aacPlus
  • Bluetooth® connectivity
  • 2D/3D graphics
  • OMA 2.0-compliant digital rights management (DRM)

The MSM6245 is scheduled to sample in the second quarter of 2006. The complete MSM6245 solution includes the RTR6275 transceiver to support highly cost-effective single-band handsets, the RFR6275 receiver to support tri-band WCDMA configurations when combined with the RTR6275, and PM6640 power management devices.

Qualcomm's chipset solutions support the Company's Launchpad™ suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, and the BREW® solution, which enables the download and monetization of advanced applications and content, allowing operators and OEMs to differentiate their products and services and increase revenues. Qualcomm's chipsets also are compatible with the Java™ runtime environment (J2ME™), which can be built entirely on the chipset as an extension to the BREW client.
