Qualcomm Announces Major Expansion of its Wireless Business Solutions Network Operations Center in Las Vegas

Sen. Harry Reid to Celebrate Opening of Center, Connection to Homeland Security

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), the leader in mobile communications for the transportation industry, today announced the expansion of its current Network Operations Center in Las Vegas, which uses GPS and other technologies to track freight transportation and shipping nationwide.

The operations center will be located in a new state-of-the-art secure building in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to Qualcomm’s Network Operations Center, the building will also house an R&D center, formed through a partnership between Qualcomm and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Institute for Security Studies, which will research the use of wireless technologies to improve homeland security and highway transportation. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada helped establish the relationship between Qualcomm and UNLV’s Institute of Security Studies, recognizing their unique role in homeland security and working to secure federal funding for the project.

“With this partnership, Qualcomm and UNLV will make our country safer,” said Sen. Reid. “In addition to addressing an important homeland security need, this center will bring more technology jobs to the Las Vegas region and increase UNLV’s role in developing cutting edge counter-terrorism technologies.”

The Network Operations Center in Las Vegas works in conjunction with Qualcomm’s main operations center in San Diego, and will act as a fully redundant networking center. The new center in Nevada will house over 100 employees, who will oversee a range of Qualcomm wireless solutions developed to track, secure and protect transportation equipment and cargo, as well as construction equipment.

“Qualcomm chose to expand its current Network Operations Center in Nevada because of the Company’s desire to reinforce its commitment to this thriving region,” said Paul Jacobs, executive vice president and president of Qualcomm Wireless & Internet Group. “Technology research is experiencing rapid growth in this area, as evidenced by UNLV’s impressive Supercomputing Center, and we felt that this relationship would be beneficial to all involved.”
