Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that the United States District Court in San Jose, California has ruled that there was no infringement by Qualcomm or its subsidiary SnapTrack Inc. of the one remaining patent claim not decided by the jury in a case tried earlier this year. A three-week jury trial in March had resulted in a unanimous verdict of noninfringement in favor of Qualcomm and SnapTrack on six of the seven claims at issue in the patent infringement lawsuit filed by Zoltar Satellite Alarm Systems. The jury could not reach a verdict as to the seventh claim. Following that verdict, Qualcomm and SnapTrack filed a motion asking the court to rule that the remaining claim was not infringed. The court granted Qualcomm’s motion in an order dated July 26. The court also denied plaintiff Zoltar’s motion for a new trial and entered judgment in favor of Qualcomm and SnapTrack..
Zoltar’s lawsuit accused Qualcomm and SnapTrack’s position location technology of infringing three patents when used to determine the location of the caller making an E-911 emergency telephone call using a cellular phone. Qualcomm and SnapTrack’s patented position location technology supports hundreds of location-based applications and is being widely deployed by numerous wireless carriers around the world.
