Qualcomm's GSM1x Technology Powers Kyocera's KZ850 Handset for China Unicom's GSM1x Trial

SAN DIEGO -- August 12, 2003 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the introduction of Kyocera's first handset supporting GSM1x technology. Based on Kyocera's KZ850 model, which includes an integrated camera and offers high-resolution color graphics and multimedia features, the new GSM1x handset will be available immediately to participants in China Unicom's GSM1x trial in Suzhou, China. This marks the first GSM1x handset for a market trial.

Kyocera's single mode, BREW-enabled GSM1x handset combines a GSM service interface with CDMA2000 premium next-generation services using a GSM SIM card. Because GSM1x is able to leverage existing CDMA2000 1X handset designs, Kyocera and other phone manufacturers can readily integrate the technology into their existing single or multimode handsets.

GSM1x is a CDMA2000 solution for GSM operators in any band that combines the benefits of CDMA2000 1X and GSM-MAP. GSM1x takes full advantage of an operator's investment in its existing GSM-MAP network, maintaining all key features and services inherent in the system. The GSM1x handset accepts a GSM SIM card and communicates with the GSM-MAP core network. GSM1x will increase an operator's voice and data capacity while enabling a cost effective overlay of CDMA2000 on a GSM network. The GSM1x solution facilitates both GSM and CDMA global roaming.
