Qualcomm Receives Distinguished Secretary's Opportunity Award from the United States Secretary of Labor

SAN DIEGO

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that it received the prestigious Secretary of Labor's Opportunity Award for 2002. Qualcomm was awarded this significant honor based on the Company's ongoing commitment to equal employment opportunity, including its commitment to addressing current and future employment issues, and for its corporate social responsibility efforts.

Dr. Irwin Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm, today personally received the Secretary of Labor's Opportunity Award from Victoria A. Lipnic, Assistant Secretary of the Employment Standards Administration during an awards ceremony in Washington D.C.

"Qualcomm is a leader in the business community for providing opportunities to women, people of color, veterans, and people with disabilities," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "Their program is a model of vision, teamwork, and commitment."

The Secretary of Labor's Opportunity Award is one of the most desired equal opportunity awards instituted by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP). Companies cannot submit applications to win the award and the recipient is chosen directly by the OFCCP and the office of the secretary based on the following criteria:

  • Commitment to and results in enhancing the employment opportunities for minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, disabled veterans and Vietnam era veterans
  • Commitment to addressing the employment issues of this decade and the next
  • Proof of measurable impact through external programs
