Eyematic Builds First U.S. Wireless Animated Messaging Service Using Qualcomm's BREW™ Platform

SAN DIEGO AND LOS ANGELES -- October 16, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology and Eyematic, a leading visual communications software provider, today announced Eyematic's "Shout Messenger" animated messaging service, enabled by Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW) platform. Shout Messenger, the first commercially available wireless animated messaging service in the United States, is available on Verizon Wireless' BREW-enabled Get It Now(sm) service. The BREW Solution is the only complete, end-to-end solution for over-the-air downloading of applications virtually anywhere, anytime.

Shout Messenger demonstrates the power of the BREW platform and Eyematic's multimedia software to create advanced mobile messaging solutions, commonly known as multimedia messaging services (MMS). Eyematic's multimedia software platform provides messaging services like Shout Messenger with capabilities such as still photos, graphics, music, speech and downloadable branded characters.

"The wireless industry has been eagerly anticipating MMS capabilities, and Qualcomm's BREW platform is the enabler for these next-generation multimedia messaging applications," said Gina Lombardi, senior vice president of marketing and product management, Qualcomm Internet Services. "Shout Messenger is a remarkable achievement for BREW and multimedia messaging worldwide. It is a testament to the ability of the BREW platform to facilitate the creation of new and exciting ways to communicate."

"Eyematic developed a sophisticated multimedia software platform to power visual services such as multimedia messaging, games and digital assistants," said Steve Hartford, vice president of marketing, Eyematic. "When combined with BREW's ability to download applications over the air, the result is a complete solution for multimedia service development and deployment."

Deployments of the BREW solution continue as carriers throughout the world join Verizon Wireless, and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in Korea and KDDI in Japan in commercializing BREW-based services. Telesp Celular, the largest mobile phone operator in Brazil, and U.S. Cellular have launched BREW user trials. Globally, China Unicom announced its plans to launch BREW-based services in China, and 16 carriers to date have indicated support for the BREW solution. Twenty-four BREW-enabled handsets are already available to consumers worldwide, and 30 device manufacturers have indicated their support for the BREW platform.

Qualcomm's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(tm) (software development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by carriers - enabling them to easily get applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server. The BREW platform is a product of Qualcomm Internet Services (QIS), a division within the Qualcomm Wireless&Internet (QWI) Group of Qualcomm Incorporated.
