Qualcomm Congratulates Telefonica Celular on Rollout of Next-Generation CDMA System in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- April 16, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates Telefonica Celular on the commercial launch of its new CDMA2000 1X network. Telefonica Celular operates in 5 Brazilian states: Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Bahia, Sergipe and Rio Grande do Sul, with a total of 5.7 million customers in Brazil (Source: Telefonica Celular).

CDMA2000 1X was first introduced in South Korea in October 2000 and to date has approximately six million subscribers and has had over 13 carrier launches worldwide.
