Qualcomm Promotes Gary Garland to Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Digital Media
SAN DIEGO -- October 9, 2000 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the promotion of Gary W. Garland to vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Digital Media. In this role, Mr. Garland will expand his current leadership as vice president of business development to assist in managing and driving strategic initiatives for Qualcomm's Digital Media business, including the Company's government business and digital cinema initiatives.

In his previous position as vice president of business development for Qualcomm Digital Cinema, Mr. Garland oversaw the development of a turn-key electronic cinema delivery system to distribute movies via electronic images to theaters using high-end compression and sophisticated encryption technology. This system aims to reduce industry costs associated with reproduction and distribution, and attack motion picture piracy using leading-edge encryption and electronic watermarking techniques.
Mr. Garland joined Qualcomm from Logicon Incorporated in 1992 as director of government marketing and was promoted to vice president two years later. Garland is experienced in both government and commercial electronic program development for a variety of different applications including training simulation, data link test and certification, and secure wireless communications systems.
Garland holds a bachelor's of science degree in Psychology from Stanford University. He is a former U.S. Navy carrier fighter pilot and also served as a commercial pilot with Continental Airlines for two years.
