Qualcomm Introduces QCT-1200™ Fixed Wireless PCS Phone

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced the introduction of the QCT-1200 fixed wireless Personal Communications Services (PCS) telephone. Based on the Company's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, the QCT-1200 is a fixed wireless telephone designed to look, function, and sound like a wireline telephone.

"The QCT-1200 will allow PCS providers to offer innovative wireless services to their customers," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm's Subscriber Products group. "The QCT-1200 will enable PCS providers to offer service in areas where standard landline cannot be easily deployed, or will allow the pursuit of potentially lucrative vertical markets, offering operators the ability to expand their target subscriber base."

Based on the U.S. 1900 MHz CDMA PCS standard (ANSI J-STD-008), the QCT-1200 will provide landline quality voice services through the use of Qualcomm's 13 Kilobit/sec PureVoice vocoder, as well as reduced background noise and enhanced security. Designed to look like a standard landline phone, the QCT-1200 has a full-size keypad and separate handset, and will be a reliable and durable instrument for a broad range of environmental conditions. When combined with an optional RS-232 data port, the QCT-1200 can provide direct connectivity to available CDMA PCS data and digital fax services.

"There are numerous opportunities in the United States for the QCT-1200, including new service areas, construction sites and vacation homes," said David McDowell, vice president of sales for Qualcomm's Subscriber Products. "PCS providers can offer a phone with wireline quality service in a device which customers already know how to use. Outside of the United States, the QCT-1200 can be used in emerging markets which have chosen CDMA in the 1900 MHz bands to provide not only basic voice services, but all the advanced voice and data services which the CDMA PCS standard has to offer." The QCT-1200 is scheduled to enter production in 1997 and will be manufactured at Qualcomm's San Diego manufacturing facility.
