Qualcomm Signs License and Distribution Agreement with Samsung America for OmniTRACS System in Korea

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced the signing of a license and distribution agreement with Samsung America, Inc., valued in excess of $1 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Samsung will be the exclusive distributor of Qualcomm's OmniTRACS® two-way mobile satellite communications and tracking system in Korea. Implementation has begun, with completion expected by mid-year.

The OmniTRACS Network Management Facility, or hub, will be located in the outskirts of Seoul, South Korea, and will be operated by Korea Telecom using Ku-band transponders on a Korea Telecom Koreasat satellite. Samsung will explore utilizing OmniTRACS technology in a variety of industry segments, including trucking, fishing, rail and fixed-site monitoring.

Consistent with Qualcomm's long-term business strategy, this agreement marks the establishment of the seventh international network management facility for Qualcomm's OmniTRACS system. The addition of the Korean hub extends the system's coverage provided by existing OmniTRACS service providers in Japan and Malaysia.

"Businesses around the world are recognizing the value of OmniTRACS technology in providing practical business solutions to the communications market," said Phil White, vice president and general manager of OmniTRACS International. "This agreement with Samsung demonstrates the growing market acceptance of the OmniTRACS system and will enable us to further expand our presence worldwide."

Once implemented, the OmniTRACS system will provide the first two-way mobile satellite communications and tracking capabilities commercially available in Korea. The system display unit will support the Hangul Korean language, which is being implemented by Samsung. The completion of this display unit will expand the number of languages supported by the OmniTRACS system to seven, including English, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean.

"We can say with full certainty that the Samsung-Qualcomm business partnership will succeed in introducing this new technology to Korea," said S.L. Jung, manager of Samsung's Santa Clara, Ca. office. "We believe the Korean market is ready to support this type of business venture and that the OmniTRACS system is the most proven and reliable technology available today."

In addition to this agreement, Samsung has a subscriber product licensing agreement with Qualcomm for its Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology. A Samsung affiliate also has an agreement with Qualcomm for the distribution of the Eudora Pro™ electronic mail (e-mail) software.

Qualcomm is the world leader in providing satellite communications, tracking and fleet management solutions to the trucking industry. With more than 145,000 OmniTRACS units sold worldwide, Qualcomm has systems operating in the United States, Canada, Europe, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Malaysia.

Headquartered in San Diego, Qualcomm develops, manufactures, markets, licenses and operates advanced communications systems and products based on its proprietary digital wireless technologies. The company's primary product areas include the OmniTRACS system (a geostationary satellite-based mobile communications system providing two-way data and position reporting services), CDMA wireless communications systems and products and, in conjunction with others, the development of the Globalstar™ low-earth-orbit(LEO) satellite communications system. Other company products include the Eudora Pro™ electronic mail software, VLSI components, and communications equipment and systems for government and commercial customers worldwide.
