Qualcomm Aids Peace-Keeping Efforts in Bosnia with OmniTRACS Mobile Communications System

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its OmniTRACS® satellite system is being used by the United States Army to support peace-keeping activities in Bosnia. The OmniTRACS satellite system, marketed as EutelTRACS® in Europe, is a two-way mobile communications and tracking system that provides the Army with the ability to track the progress of U.S. forces and supplies over treacherous mountain roads.

"For the first time, Army truck drivers will have two-way communications and command control over long distances," stated U.S. Army logistics analyst John Waddick. "We expect that the satellite-based system will be particularly useful in the rugged terrain of southern Europe where traditional radio communications are often impossible."

Currently being installed on a variety of military vehicles, the OmniTRACS system has already proven to be instrumental in helping to improve communications in southern Europe.

"Bitter storms have caused traditional phone lines to go down in many areas of southern Europe, but the OmniTRACS system has provided a means of reliable communications in spite of the harsh conditions," Waddick added.

"Qualcomm"s OmniTRACS system has provided a vital two-way communications link to the transportation industry for more than seven years," stated John Sarto, vice president and general manager of Qualcomm's OmniTRACS division. "We are proud to now provide this capability to our American troops. Knowing the challenges our troops must be facing, we're privileged to play a small part in supporting them in their peace-keeping efforts."

Alcatel Qualcomm, the exclusive distributor or the EutelTRACS system in Europe, currently has contracts with 17 service providers offering coverage to 24 countries throughout Europe, from the United Kingdom to Russia, and from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean Sea. The EutelTRACS Network Management Facility is located in Rambouillet, France, and is operated by the European Satellite Organization (EUTELSTAT).

Qualcomm is the world leader in providing satellite communications, tracking and fleet management solutions to the trucking industry. With more than 145,000 OmniTRACS units sold worldwide, Qualcomm has systems operating in the United States, Canada, Europe, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Malaysia.

Headquartered in San Diego, Qualcomm develops, manufactures, markets, licenses and operates advanced communications systems and products based on its proprietary digital wireless technologies. The Company's primary product areas include the OmniTRACS system (a geostationary satellite-based mobile communications system providing two-way data and position reporting services), CDMA wireless communications systems and products and, in conjunction with others, the development of the Globalstar™ low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communications system. Other company products include the Eudora Pro™ electronic mail software, VLSI components, and communications equipment and systems for government and commercial customers worldwide.
