On Monday, Qualcomm Technologies unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, representing a quantum leap for the mobile platform. Today, we announced Snapdragon Cockpit Elite and Snapdragon Ride Elite, marking a major step forward in making the next generation of vehicles a reality. Together, they represent the new standard in their respective fields and a new bar for Qualcomm Technologies.

Elite, after all, is more than just a name.

But what does Elite actually mean? Let’s break that down and answer all your burning questions about our new naming convention.

So, why "Elite"?

"Elite" signifies the crème de la crème — the best of the best in capability and quality. It's a promise that our top-tier processors not only meet but exceed expectations. The name represents the pinnacle of next-generation Snapdragon platforms, a symbol of premium performance and innovation.

Why should I care about the “Elite” name?

Because it’s more than just a name. "Elite" is a commitment to delivering the very best. By reserving the "Elite" name for our most advanced products, we're guiding partners and consumers toward the peak of our innovation. It's a signal that they're experiencing the absolute cutting edge of technology.

With our “Elite” Snapdragon products, we're not just setting the bar — we're defining it. We're pushing boundaries to ensure that the ultimate Snapdragon experience is always an "Elite" one. So, buckle up and get ready to experience the future of technology, driven by the power of Snapdragon “Elite”.

Wasn’t Elite used before?

Yes! At last year’s Snapdragon Summit, we introduced Snapdragon X Elite, our compute processor that set new standards, delivering the trifecta of unmatched power efficiency, personalized AI experiences and leading performance in its class.

This is where the "Elite" journey began.

With Snapdragon X Elite, we broke new ground, achieving breakthrough compute performance, battery life, and AI at even greater efficiency. It supports supercharged performance with low-power consumption for up to multi-day battery life on a single charge.1

And now, the second-generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU is set to revolutionize mobile and auto, ushering in the next era of "Elite" platforms.

What makes the Snapdragon 8 Elite so “Elite”?

Ever since we announced Snapdragon X Elite, we've been gearing up for this moment. What we’ve developed this year marks a significant turning point for smartphones and the industry. With Qualcomm Oryon CPU, we have engineered the first and only modern Android system on a chip (SoC) that’s built from the ground up with a custom CPU. And with its debut in mobile, we are revolutionizing premium Android experiences.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform is the embodiment of our innovation. It boasts the world's fastest mobile CPU with peak speeds of 4.32 GHz. Plus, it delivers a 45% boost in CPU performance, 40% Adreno GPU boost, up to 45% faster NPU and up to 27% overall power savings.2

Given its unprecedented performance and capabilities, this milestone deserves a special, premium variant of our leading Snapdragon 8 series. It deserves the "Elite" moniker and a striking new badge color — our iconic, vibrant Snapdragon red. This bold, shiny red will be instantly recognizable; a beacon to the best and most premium of our mobile offerings.

What about Snapdragon 8 chips that don’t have the Elite name?

We offer a range of mobile platforms tailored to meet diverse market needs, each launched strategically throughout the year to power smartphones at every level. The naming and positioning of each platform are determined by a variety of factors, including performance capabilities, consumer preferences, price points and launch timelines. We collaborate closely with our OEM partners to ensure each platform aligns with industry needs.

The "Elite" designation represents the pinnacle of our roadmap, signifying the highest tier of performance and innovation. Other Snapdragon 8 series mobile platforms, like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, while not carrying the “Elite” name, are still designed to deliver exceptional mobile experiences.

What about Snapdragon Elite in vehicles?

In the automotive sphere, we introduced Snapdragon Cockpit Elite and Snapdragon Ride Elite, both designed to transform in-car experiences. These powerhouse platforms deliver unprecedented levels of performance and intelligence,3 perfectly suited for next-generation vehicles. They offer comprehensive, top-tier solutions for digital cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems, ensuring unparalleled performance and reliability.

Across both Snapdragon Ride Elite and Snapdragon Cockpit Elite is the second-generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a first for automotive and custom-built for vehicles. It’s a significant leap in performance and power efficiency,4 allowing automakers to evolve toward a more consolidated architecture that supports more efficient data sharing within the vehicle. Designed for flexibility, this new “Elite” tier allows automakers to power any combination of automated driving and cockpit features on a single chipset.

So when it came to naming our next generation automotive platform — similar to mobile — there’s nothing encapsulating their superior capabilities better than "Elite."
