That’s why yesterday, streaming from our eighth annual Snapdragon Summit, we were very excited to unveil to the world our latest and greatest — Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. THE titan of on-device intelligence featuring nine premium powerhouse experiences for when your achievements are loftier than your expectations so you can think above and beyond the box.  

The bar has been raised — here’s exactly what that looks like. 

1. Stand-out with background video versatility  

Engagement is essential when it comes to interacting with your audiences — whether that be social media or on video calls. Real-time background video replacement helps you rise above the noise because it lets you swiftly replace your background with any power-packed image or video.  

But this is not just about eye candy: This is a moment to fully let your personality shine, and tell your story your way.  

How it works: By utilizing our Cognitive Image Signal Processor (Cognitive ISP) and Qualcomm AI Engine, you can remove the existing background and replace it with a different background of your choice, created by generative AI.

Use it for: Use this feature to replace your video background with dynamic and immersive visuals to show who you really are. This extra layer of creativity can help you stand out from the crowd, so your content can be memorable and impactful.

Need to stream live from your mom’s couch in a pinch? You got this — a few quick moves and you can appear to be in front of the Eiffel Tower or anywhere in the world.

2. Stay front and center of the video action

Do you ever find yourself having to decide between your selfie and your rear camera? Well, now you can have it all. 

Making its debut in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the Vloggers View, thanks to our Cognitive ISP. It puts you in the center of the action so you can be on-screen while you share and narrate what you’re filming from the back camera.  

How it works: This new feature uses our Cognitive ISP to enable a deep learning pixel algorithm called semantic segmentation on both cameras so you can use both of them at the same time. 

Use it for: Capture reaction videos, vlogs or interviews where you can show your expressions while also capturing the interviewee and/or scene.

We’re also thinking makeup tutorials, cooking demos or any hands-on activities where you want to show your face and the action simultaneously. The possibilities are endless.

3. Travel planning just got easier 

We’re excited to show you an on-device generative artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that pulls the latest flight information from Skyscanner in the cloud, resulting in an experience that blends the best of on-device and cloud AI. This advanced AI assistant — through voice commands or text — runs solely on-device, making it ultra-private.  

How it works: Let's say you want to plan a trip to Paris. Simply say, "Hey Assistant, please look for the best flight options to San Diego from Paris." Your assistant will promptly generate recommendations on-device, then search for the latest flights in the cloud, and you can even specify your preference for a non-stop flight.  

What’s new here is the assistant plugs-in to Skyscanner — so once you get the results you like, you are given a link to flights and can purchase in a snap.  

Use it for: Planning trips in pajamas: This AI assistant tailors everything to you while keeping your personal details the way you like it — private.

4. Extend your earbud reach

We’re the first to bring you the Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network Technology (XPAN). Imagine uninterrupted audio streaming as you move around your home, office or even another floor of a building, while still delivering sound quality unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

How it works: XPAN is the connectivity layer, which expands on the existing wireless experiences you know and love when using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, choosing the right connectivity option based on your needs, where you are and the connectivity conditions around you. 

If you move out of Bluetooth range to another room or floor of your building, your earbuds or headphones will seamlessly switch from a direct connection to your phone, instead connecting to it via Wi-Fi, staying connected as you go, whether you are listening to music or making calls. 

Use it for: Our revolutionary, new XPAN technology unlocks new sound experiences, letting you dance, express and decompress in the moment, untethered and unbothered so you can push the boundaries of your artistic vision.

5. This AI is all about you

On-device personalization is a remarkable feature that leverages the Qualcomm Sensing Hub and the on-device large language model (LLM) to generate personalized responses from an AI assistant tailored to your specific needs and preferences, based on information collected from your device such as your age, health, favorite activities, current location and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth data. 

How it works: The Qualcomm Sensing Hub, working in conjunction with the on-device LLM assistant, continuously processes and analyzes data from various sensors on your device. This data is then taken to create a neural network that feeds into the LLM, offering habit-based suggestions.  

The more you use your device, the more tailored and relevant the responses become. The processing of this data occurs entirely on the device, helping to ensure that your personal information remains private and secure.  

Use it for: Let’s say you’re a travel vlogger, and you just arrived at your latest destination. Knowing that you’re all about surfing in the morning, our on-device AI personalization will recommend a great surfing beach (or maybe a few) upon your arrival. So, it does all the work so you can focus on your next big idea.

6. Up close and awestruck

Our new global illumination feature lets you experience more lighting, shadows and reflections in complex gaming scenes. The result is captivating gaming experiences that closely resemble real-world lighting conditions for stunning photo-realistic visuals.

How it works: The multi-source lighting capability ensures accurate representation of light sources from various directions, enhancing visual appeal. Shadows and reflections are realistically calculated and rendered, considering the position and intensity of light sources, adding depth and realism to scenes.

Use it for: Snapdragon supports the Lumen Global Illumination and Reflection Systems in Unreal Engine 5. Developers can harness this feature and apply it to fan-favorite games so users can jump into new game worlds that accurately reflect real life. Gaming just got a whole lot more illuminating.

7. The big picture

Sometimes you just want to look at things from a “far out” perspective. So, we worked with Tetras.AI to introduce an innovative feature called Photo Expansion that takes photo editing to the next level with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.  

This cutting-edge technology intuitively extends a photo beyond its original capture, allowing you to zoom out and impeccably fill in the background. Now, even parts of the background that were not initially captured in the photo can be intelligently constructed, resulting in a more immersive and visually appealing image.

How it works: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and the advanced algorithms developed by Tetras.AI analyze the existing content of the photo to generate realistic background extensions.  

Use it for: Fill in the gaps when the city scape gets cut off, the giant sequoia is too tall to fit in frame, or anytime you need to create stunning images that go beyond the limitations of the original shot.

8. Fast content at your fingertips 

With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 you can generate an image to inspire your creative spark in a flash. And it’s the world’s fastest stable diffusion — running completely on-device. It can help you generate an image at a fraction of a second; no more wait time to generate the best image for your social media or content creation tasks.

How it works: Stable Diffusion is a foundation model that utilizes transformer networks trained on vast amounts of data. It is capable of generating photorealistic images from text prompts within seconds.

Through full-stack AI optimization, including quantization and compilation, Stable Diffusion can now run efficiently on devices, enabling on-device image generation.

Use it for: Let's say you're looking to engage your social media audience with eye-catching visuals. Use this feature to take your game to the next level.

With Stable Diffusion's optimized performance, your social media feed can be filled with unique visuals that grab their attention and leave a lasting impression.

9. Informed on-the-go

There’s nothing like crisp, clean air to refresh us. Thanks to our collaboration with Mobile Physics and STMicroelectronics, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 introduces the first on-device mobile air quality monitoring.

This groundbreaking feature includes two world-first advancements: Always-Sensing Smoke Detection and an Air Quality Index sensor, both specifically designed for smartphones. This solution is an impressive 600 times smaller than standalone air quality monitoring devices, without sacrificing accuracy.

How it works: By leveraging STMicroelectronics' direct time-of-flight sensor and Mobile Physics AI, the on-device air quality monitor can detect tiny particles with diameters less than 10 micrometers, even in high densities of up to 100,000 micrograms per cubic meter. And since it’s integrated into the Always Sensing Hub, it can continuously operate 24/7, providing real-time air quality information.

Use it for: This feature is pretty practical: For example, there’s a personal smoke detection feature for while you’re out and about or traveling. And you can enable access to hyperlocal air quality information wherever you go, so you can make informed decisions about your environment and well-being.
