The way we do almost everything changed over this past year. Connectivity became a lifeline — for work, entertainment, healthcare, education, and staying in touch with friends and family. And I was incredibly proud to see how our work in 5G and other mobile technologies played a part in this digital transformation.
As I step into the role as CEO here at Qualcomm, I’m acutely aware of how fortunate I am to lead a company that invents the 5G breakthroughs that are taking on some of the world’s biggest challenges. Our commitment to providing more 5G connectivity to everyone and all industries, from automotive to manufacturing to telemedicine, continues.
The potential of 5G is massive. At MWC Barcelona 2021 today, I shared our vision of connecting the cloud to intelligent edge devices everywhere, and how we plan to work with the entire ecosystem to continue this strong momentum and take advantage of the opportunity ahead.
5G is expected to drive tremendous economic growth. Accenture estimates that by 2025, 5G will add trillions in GDP to economies in Europe and the U.S. And, in China, 5G commercialization will create an estimated 3.5 million jobs.
5G also means real change for the mobile ecosystem. In the last 16 months, more than 165 operators have launched commercial 5G networks, with over 270 additional operators investing to deploy the technology. And our solutions are enabling almost 1,000 5G design wins across smartphones, mobile PCs, data cards, home CPEs, and even XR glasses.
This impressive level of proliferation is propelling the next wave of innovation. In order for that to happen to the fullest extent — and for us to realize 5G’s true potential — we need to take advantage of all of its capabilities. The use of all spectrum types and bands is key. Using both mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum is critical to delivering the multi-Gigabit speeds, massive capacity, and ultra-low latency required for a new generation of consumer and enterprise applications in which everything connects to the cloud.
With smartphones powered by our Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF systems, average 5G mmWave download speeds in the U.S. are 16x faster than 5G sub-6 GHz, and average 5G download speeds in the US are an incredible 38 times faster than LTE.* The industry is paying attention, with more than 180 operators in over 45 countries investing in 5G mmWave worldwide, including China Unicom, which is expected to bring 5G mmWave to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Our 4th generation 5G modem-to-antenna solution, the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System, is the world’s first 3GPP Release 16 Modem-RF system. And I’m thrilled to share that it recently broke cellular speed records by delivering more than 10 Gbps downloads — a world’s first. This milestone was achieved using 5G mmWave, a technology pioneered by Qualcomm Technologies. We expect to see commercial devices with Snapdragon X65’s unmatched data speeds, power efficiency, and performance by the end of the year.
To enable the next generation of networks, we need continued innovation in 5G cellular infrastructure. That’s why I’m excited to announce the Qualcomm 5G RAN Platform for Small Cells — the Qualcomm FSM 200 series. Our second-generation platform is designed to deliver unmatched capacity and data speeds of 8 Gbps with global spectrum support and leading power efficiency with compatibility with a virtualized and interoperable RAN architecture.
Innovation continues in our premium-tier mobile platforms as well. Our new Snapdragon 888+ Mobile Platform is designed to bring profoundly intelligent entertainment to flagship Android devices, with AI-enhanced gameplay, streaming, photography, and more. Our Snapdragon fans expect the very best premium experiences. And to give them a little extra, we launched our Snapdragon Insiders Program. In just a few months, membership on our Snapdragon Insiders Program channels grew to more than 1 million followers worldwide** – and the number continues to grow.
From the network to the device, we’re building 5G innovation platforms to scale to meet the demand of all sectors. That includes automotive where 5G positioning and GNSS satellite-based positioning are working together to move vehicles toward full autonomy. And our C-V2X technologies can complement wide-area 5G for advanced applications like navigation with high-resolution 3D maps.
3GPP Release 17 will open even more opportunities for innovation in wireless and build on the foundation we’ve established with 5G. We’re excited to work with the ecosystem to drive the benefits of 5G across industries. It’s part of our vision of connecting the cloud to intelligent edge devices everywhere.
