The Future of the PC: How 5G connectivity will transform laptop computing into modern, mobile PCs [video]

Qualcomm SVP and GM Alex Katouzian kicks off his “The Future of…” series with an insightful, forward-looking discussion about the mobile PC.

The evolution from laptops into mobile PCs is one of the most exciting transformations to happen in computing. Traditional laptops designed for mobility were often slow, bulky, and had limited battery life. Traditional PCs are also mostly restricted to Wi-Fi networks found in your home, office, or coffee shop, putting barriers and security concerns on how people can connect, compute, and communicate anywhere. Users wanted more freedom and reliable connectivity when using their PCs without compromising connectivity, security, power, security, or efficiency. With Qualcomm Snapdragon compute platforms, we created innovative cellular and computing technology to deliver the next leap in PC experiences.

We believe users deserve all the flexibility and best features of their smartphone inside their PCs. That’s why Qualcomm Technologies made the world more connected than it’s ever been with 4G and 5G connectivity, transforming laptops into  a new era of mobile computing that enable customers the freedom to connect from nearly anywhere.

And beyond connectivity, we’re proud of the many other premium experiences platforms like our Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G compute platform enable. Intelligent access to both performance and long battery life (not sacrificing one for the other) in a thin and light PC. Additionally, advanced AI capabilities work in tandem with reliable 5G connectivity to bring enterprise-grade security, increased privacy, and ultra-fast remote connections to cloud platforms, offering quick access to files and cloud-based services from virtually anywhere. And now, more and more Windows 10 applications are optimized for ARM-based architecture, allowing users access to all their favorite productivity tools and apps while still taking advantage of a portable, efficient device.

After all these incredible advancements, what does the future hold for the mobile PC? That’s the question we look to answer within our first video in a new series focused on “The Future of”. For this discussion, I sat down with Qualcomm TechnologiesSenior Director of Product Management Miguel Nunes, Lenovo’s Executive Director of Worldwide Commercial Portfolio Tom Butler, and Creative Strategies President Carolina Milanesi to discuss the future of the PC, how Qualcomm Technologies and Lenovo are collaborating to bring those experiences to life, and even continued 5G and AI advancements, IoT applications, and the potential of XR.

A resurgence in demand for mobile PCs is transforming how enterprise professionals, students, and consumers engage with their laptops, and we talk about how — like smartphones — connectivity, efficiency, portability, AI and security will be key driving forces for future always-connected PC users. I am grateful that Lenovo’s Tom Butler shares our vision for new, exciting devices. Our collaboration boosts innovation and creates longstanding ecosystems to transform laptop computing into modern mobile PCs.
