Get immersed in the wild with Tango powered by Snapdragon

The Singapore ArtScience Museum presents an innovative augmented reality experience

Starting this week, visitors of the Singapore ArtScience Museum will be treated to a first-of-its-kind immersive experience, powered by Tango and Snapdragon. Built in collaboration with Google, Lenovo, WWF, the ArtScience Museum and Singaporean artist, Brian Gothong Tan, and in association with Panasonic and Qualcomm Technologies, the new Into the Wild exhibit transforms over 1,000 square meters of the museum into a virtual Southeast Asian rainforest. The experience is made possible using the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, the world’s first Tango-enabled device, which is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor. It’s the latest and greatest example of how Tango is being used to support innovative, compelling immersive experiences.

Into the Wild: An Immersive Virtual Adventure

Visitors of the exhibit get to step into the role of a wildlife reserve ranger, equipped with a Tango-enabled phone to complete their immersive journey. In the transformed museum space, they can learn about the Rimbang Baling Wildlife Reserve in Sumatra, Indonesia, the creatures that live there, and how to protect and rehabilitate its forests. The exhibit transforms the real into the virtual, and back again as visitors are given the opportunity to have real-world impact in helping to rehabilitate the rainforest of Southeast Asia by donating to WWF to have a tree planted in their name in the reserve.

The Technology

At the core of the experience is the Snapdragon powered Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. The Snapdragon 652 processor is engineered to combine efficient hardware integration and processing in a single System-on-Chip (SoC), as well as cutting-edge time stamping and camera and sensor processing capabilities.

The Snapdragon heterogeneous computing platform is optimally balanced for a Tango workload and is designed for all-day use. Demanding computer vision processing is performed by a single highly-efficient SoC with a tightly integrated suite of key modules, including a DSP, ISP and sensor hub. Snapdragon 652 is also designed to quickly process and time stamp the data received from all three camera sensors, gyro, and accelerometer simultaneously, resulting in a fast, smooth augmented reality experience, where 3D AR graphic overlays track more naturally to the physical surroundings.

With Tango on the Snapdragon 652, the Phab 2 Pro promises to change the way people think about mapping indoor spaces and smartphone augmented reality. To deliver an optimal visual experience, the Phab 2 Pro has a 6”+ screen with intelligent Assertive Display featuring pin-sharp QHD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution, capable of optimizing image quality based on ambient lighting and content.

An Eye to the Future

The Into the Wild exhibit adds to the catalog of immersive experiences that users can have with Tango-enabled smartphones. We’re excited to see how other museums and public spaces make use of Tango to create new compelling experiences.
