Qualcomm, Acer build 802.11ad Wi-Fi ecosystem with TravelMate notebooks and accessories

Whether it’s answering emails at the office or uploading important documents on the go, every professional needs two things: a great Wi-Fi connection and a reliable laptop. The new Acer TravelMate P series notebooks (the P658, P648, P238, and P446) do both, blending superior connectivity and a design that adapts to any work environment.

Featuring the latest tri-band Wi-Fi technology from Qualcomm Atheros, the new TravelMate P series offers the latest notebooks with 802.11ad wireless connectivity (also known as WiGig). In addition to working on the 2.4- and 5-GHz frequencies, tri-band Wi-Fi systems use the 60-GHz spectrum to deliver higher-capacity internet at multi-gigabit speeds. Supporting speeds of up to 4.6 Gbps—that’s 10 times faster than 802.11ac—the TravelMate P series is built to handle media-intensive downloads, streaming, and projecting, with a mere 30 milliseconds of latency.

Don’t have an 802.11ad router yet? Not a problem. The TravelMate P series also works in parallel with 802.11ac, so it can connect to practically any Wi-Fi router available today.

Hoping to boost productivity by decluttering your workspace? Acer also announced tri-band Wi-Fi in the ProDock Wireless. The optional dock harnesses WiGig speeds and multiple ports—DisplayPort, VGA, DVI, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB 3.0. It connects your laptop to all your accessories, storage devices, and displays wirelessly, providing virtually lag-free connectivity even when streaming 4K video.

Speed aside, the notebook also builds on the elegant design of the Acer TravelMate P645, which won the 2014 iF Design award, as well as the 2014 and 2015 Red Dot Design Award. Like this predecessor, the P series notebooks are versatile, and most models feature a slim glass and carbon fiber body, durable enough for the road, yet lightweight enough to carry back and forth to the office.

Tri-band Wi-Fi can mean speeds of up to 4.6 Gbps—10X faster than 802.11ac.

The TravelMate P series marries powerful graphics and processing for maximum productivity. With a wide range of features, the notebooks are engineered to seamlessly exchange, transfer, and sync information via USB 3.1 Type-C and USB 3.0 ports, and also NFC and LTE support with some models. Powering your other devices is also easier with power-off charging using USB 3.0 ports. Additionally, the notebooks feature Acer DustDefender, an innovative fan designed so your work isn’t derailed by slow performance. And, with certain models, the battery can last up to 8 hours, to help ensure that you can keep working even on a transcontinental flight.

Finally, with any work computer, security is paramount. The TravelMate P series includes Acer Disk Anti-Shock Protection (DASP), G-sensor protected HDDs, TPM 1.2, pre-boot fingerprint authentication support and Kensington locks, engineered to keep your data and hardware safe.

The Acer TravelMate P series is currently available in North America at authorized Acer resellers.
