DASH – It’s Happening All Around You

If you watch YouTube videos, or are a Netflix or Hulu subscriber, then most likely you have seen DASH in action. DASH adaptive streaming solutions are fast becoming the video delivery format of choice for over-the-top streaming delivery, and even for mobile streaming broadcast. This early success is in part due to the efforts of the DASH Industry Forum—now with more than 65 member companies—which develops and provides DASH interoperability guidelines, provides DASH tools and education, and promotes DASH deployment globally. Content providers, network operators, encoding companies, handset manufacturers, infrastructure vendors—all categories of participants in the content creation and delivery ecosystem—are developing, encoding, sending and displaying DASH-formatted content. DASH certainly appears to be succeeding in its goals to deliver a superior viewing experience at a lower cost.

See DASH in action at the NAB Show® April 7-10 in Las Vegas.

If you missed seeing DASH demonstrations at the Consumer Electronics Show or Mobile World Congress earlier this year, plan on attending the NAB Show. This electronic media conference targets professionals in the filmed entertainment industry as well as those involved in the development, management and delivery of content solutions—a perfect audience for DASH. Dozens of companies will be showcasing their DASH solutions. To see the Qualcomm Technologies DASH client in action, check it out at Akamai Technologies in booth SL4525. The demo will showcase DASH using a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 805 device streaming HEVC (H.265) video at an astonishing 4K Ultra HD resolution.

The NAB Show offers plenty of opportunities to learn more about DASH, including an educational seminar on the latest technical and market updates, and a networking reception with DASH Industry Forum members. You can register to attend these events at:

What is Qualcomm doing with DASH?

Qualcomm Technologies continues to strongly support DASH initiatives, including active participation in the DASH Industry Forum (founding member, board member, chairing the interoperability working group). Our DASH client became available to OEMs for high-tier Android devices in November 2012 and is currently available to all OEMs across the full range of Qualcomm Technologies Android device solutions. The Qualcomm Technologies DASH client has been optimized to provide superior performance as an integrated part of its Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processors. Exclusive features and enhancements of our DASH solution include our:

  • Qualcomm Stream Manager™ – offering optimized wireless rate adaptation for Wi-Fi and cellular (3G/4G) networks; and
  • Snapdragon Transport Accelerator™ – accelerating HTTP/TCP transport for higher throughput, faster startup and less stalls under network error conditions.

This all means that users should see HD and 4K video play better and faster on mobile devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors using DASH. One top tier OEM is already shipping the Qualcomm Technologies DASH client and others are already in trials with operators.

Qualcomm Technologies is also enabling delivery of DASH content over LTE Broadcast. Our multicast service device client (MSDC), available on the Snapdragon 800 processor, includes our DASH stack and Qualcomm RaptorQ™ Forward Error Correction, to ensure an HD video experience even when the network has packet loss. Korea Telecom launched their LTE Broadcast service using Qualcomm® solutions in January 2014 on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. Operators in other regions around the world are also in trials.
