- Survios Game Studios has taken Alien: Rogue Incursion – Evolved Edition from a VR title to gaming consoles and the desktop.
- This marks a major milestone not only for the Alien franchise but also for game development on Windows on Snapdragon.
- Improvements include NEON intrinsics support, Arm64EC compatibility, device profile integration, bootstrap package enhancements and driver awareness.
On September 30, Survios Game Studios launched Alien: Rogue Incursion – Evolved Edition, a re-imagined, flat-screen version of their acclaimed VR title. This marks a major milestone not only for the Alien franchise but also for game development on Windows on Snapdragon, showcasing the power of Unreal Engine 5 on compute devices with Snapdragon processors.
A new chapter in the Alien universe
Set between the events of Alien and Aliens, Rogue Incursion follows Zula Hendricks, a rogue Colonial Marine, and her synthetic companion Davis 01 as they investigate a distress signal from the remote planet Purdan (LV-354). They uncover a Weyland-Yutani blacksite overrun by Xenomorphs—deadlier and more cunning than ever before.
Originally released as a VR-exclusive title in 2024, the Evolved Edition brings the terrifying experience to a broader audience on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store. With rebuilt controls, enhanced visuals and cinematic presentation, the game retains its horror roots while embracing action-packed gameplay.
Built on Unreal Engine 5 with gaming powered by Snapdragon
Survious leveraged Unreal Engine 5 to deliver immersive lighting, physics and AI behavior. They used technologies like Lumen and Chaos Physics during development, with final builds relying on GPU light baking for performance on VR and other platforms. They made ample use of the Gameplay Ability System to manage both player and enemy behaviors, ensuring fluid and responsive combat.
Gaming powered by Snapdragon
The game is optimized for Windows on Snapdragon, with minimum specs targeting Snapdragon X and recommended specs for Snapdragon X Elite processors. This is a significant showcase for gaming on Snapdragon, demonstrating that high-fidelity titles can run smoothly on energy-efficient platforms.
Survios packaged their binaries using Arm64EC, a hybrid ABI that allows native Arm64 code to interoperate with x64 components. This approach simplifies development and ensures compatibility with existing Windows libraries and tools.
Development, packaging and optimization for Windows on Snapdragon with Unreal Engine 5
Building for Windows on Snapdragon on Unreal is now easier than ever. Support for the Arm64 and Arm64EC compiler toolchains is built into the editor and supported* in Unreal Build Tool as of UE 5.6 (Experimental).
(*Ongoing efforts continue in the build system support. Please check Epic Games for updates.)
The Survios team in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies has made significant strides so that devices powered by Snapdragon are treated as first-class platforms in their development pipeline. Notable improvements include:
- NEON intrinsics support: Enabled for select plugins like RigLogic to boost performance.
- Arm64EC compatibility: Updated CMake logic to support Arm64EC.
- Device profile integration: Added support for device profiles specific to Snapdragon.
- Bootstrap package enhancements: Modified BootstrapPackageGame files to detect alternative Windows platforms and launch the correct executable based on architecture.
- Driver awareness: Implemented warnings to prompt users to update to the latest optimized Snapdragon drivers.
