Tango offers users augmented reality experiences on their smartphones and tablets. It has the potential of becoming ubiquitous within mobile devices. We at Qualcomm Technologies are already well underway with preparations for a Tango-enabled future. We started by making Tango-specific software optimizations to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor, which powers the world's first Tango-enabled smartphone, the Lenovo Phab2 Pro, announced earlier this month. Today, we’re excited to announce the expanded availability of Tango on the popular Snapdragon 820 processor, and our plans to support Tango on future Snapdragon 600 and 800 tier processors.
As we’ve noted, the Snapdragon 652 offers many advanatges for Tango, including high accuracy, uniform time stamping of multiple sensor data streams, efficient processing without the need for external co-processors, and leading camera and sensor processing technology. Now, Snapdragon 820 offers the same advantages, as well as the added benefits of our premium Snapdragon 800 tier processors, including higher performance and even lower power consumption.
The fact is, all Snapdragon 600 and 800 series processors share the same architectural advantages needed to deliver Tango experiences in highly mobile form factors. Tightly integrated into a single chip, the components of Snapdragon processors are uniquely equipped to simultaneously process data from all five Tango-related sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, and three camera sensors, including two new Tango-specific camera sensors: a fisheye motion tracking camera and a depth sensor camera).
Snapdragon 600 and 800 series processors also include an integrated global high-frequency clock, which performs highly accurate, uniform time stamping of all that sensor data, which is critical for enabling smooth augmented reality experiences, where 3D graphic overlays track virtually seamlessly with physical surroundings.
This broad combination of highly capable hardware, plus the portability of Qualcomm Technologies’ Tango-specific software optimizations, allows Tango to be easily deployed on the Snapdragon 820 processor and on future Snapdragon 600 series and 800 series processors. Because of our long standing efforts to achieve highly efficient and rich mobile user experiences, Snapdragon 600 and 800 series processors are capable of supporting truly breakthrough experiences like Tango without requiring substantial hardware modifications or software development.
Tango is an excellent example of the innovative thinking that delivers valuable next-generation mobile experiences today. OEMs and other companies are increasingly turning to Snapdragon processors to deliver the performance, accuracy, and advanced technology required to deploy these experiences. Because Snapdragon processors are in many cases already designed for next-gen services, companies we work with have an opportunity to accelerate their deployment plans and innovate with cost-effective devices, rapid deployment, and cutting-edge experiences.
