Qualcomm Commits $500,000 in Scholarship Funds to Leading Chinese Universities

Funds to Promote Innovations in Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University and Tsinghua University

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that it has committed $500,000 in scholarship funds to Peking University and Tsinghua University.  Scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in engineering and computer science during new school year awards ceremonies.

Both universities have initiated their Qualcomm scholarship programs, marking Qualcomm’s commitment to promote and improve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and expand opportunities for young innovators in China.

Qualcomm’s commitment of $100,000 to Peking University is matched by the University to create two endowed scholarships per year in perpetuity. Peking University selects the recipients of its scholarships based on entrance examination performance, grades, and mastery of subject knowledge. In addition to committing scholarship funds, Qualcomm R&D Centers will look to expand the existing university relations program and explore research collaborations with Peking University students.

Qualcomm has commited $100,000 to Tsinghua University to fund thirty-three scholarships each year for four school years, marking a total of $400,000. Scholarship recipients are selected by the Tsinghua Scholarships Standards Committee based on their academic achievements and research abilities. Qualcomm R&D Centers in Beijing have worked with Tsinghua University for more than 12 years on collaborative research projects to encourage innovation and forward-thinking in students. Project focus areas include wireless communications and signal processing, and examining the resulting economic impact of the evolution of cellular technologies in conjunction with Tsinghua University’s MBA School. Tsinghua University students participate in Qualcomm’s robust internship program, and Qualcomm offers on-campus classes to students in the fields of science and engineering.

“Qualcomm has a long history of invention, and we believe that fostering the next generation of inventors is essential to sustaining continuous growth and innovation in China’s flourishing technology industry,” said Xiang Wang, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Greater China. “Through these new scholarships and ongoing collaborative projects with our R&D centers, we look forward to providing students from Tsinghua University and Peking University the tools they need to innovate and deliver groundbreaking changes to China and the rest of the world.”

Through these scholarships and programs, Qualcomm continues to foster young leaders in the fields of science and engineering in China.
