Qualcomm’s Collaboration with Microsoft Reshapes the Smartphone Market

Multiple Windows Mobile Smartphones Launch Worldwide, Leveraging Industry’s Most Integrated Chipsets

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, today announced an important milestone with the worldwide availability of multiple Windows Mobile smartphones based on the company's collaboration with Microsoft. The devices offer advanced functionality in thin and sleek form factors by leveraging the two companies' work to integrate support for Windows Mobile into Qualcomm's chipsets, eliminating the need for a separate applications processor. Leading device manufacturers, including HTC Corp., LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung, have devices on the market or in design based on Qualcomm chipsets with integrated support for Windows Mobile.

“Qualcomm and Microsoft have streamlined the process of bringing a Windows Mobile smartphone to market,” said Paul Bae, vice president of the product planning team, mobile communications company, LG Electronics. “Many of the compelling features of our KS20 consumer-focused Windows Mobile handset are made possible in part by the greater integration offered by the Qualcomm chipsets supporting Windows Mobile.”

“Windows Mobile empowers people to stay connected to the information they need, keeping them productive on the go,” said John O'Rourke, general manager, mobile communications business at Microsoft Corp. “We are proud of this milestone with Qualcomm because we're delivering a variety of phones with better performance, delighting customers with a great experience.”

“Together, Qualcomm and Microsoft have helped the overall smartphone market to expand by enabling device manufacturers to get their products to market faster with reduced cost and design times,” said Steve Mollenkopf, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “We are very excited to see the next-generation smartphones now become available around the world, and with the comprehensive set of business and entertainment applications users want.”

Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) MSM7xxx-series, dual-core chipsets feature integrated support for Windows Mobile, as well as a wide range of hardware-accelerated multimedia capabilities, connectivity features and mobile broadband support. The two companies first announced their collaborative relationship in May 2006 and have since continued their relationship to include collaborative development work on the MSM7225™ solution for HSPA and MSM7525™ chipset for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A, which are designed to expand mobile broadband smartphones beyond the enterprise segment into mainstream consumer markets by enabling even lower-cost devices.

There are currently more than 20 additional smartphone devices in design that leverage MSM chipsets and Windows Mobile to support a wide range of business and entertainment applications, such as Microsoft Office Mobile, Windows Live for Windows Mobile, and third-party offerings.
