Latest Numbers Validate Qualcomm's BREW™ as the Premier Wireless Data Solution for Application Developers, Handset Manufacturers and Network Operators

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced several milestones that demonstrate the success of the BREW solution. As the industry's complete end-to-end wireless data applications solution that enables wireless operators to rapidly deploy wireless data application download services, Qualcomm's BREW solution is proving itself to be a driving force behind the worldwide proliferation of wireless data products and services, and revenue-generating opportunities for developers and publishers. Numbers that support the BREW solution's growing popularity include:

  • 28 million individual BREW-based application downloads ? with more than 3 million downloads occurring in March 2003
  • 8 million BREW-enabled handsets in the market
  • 50 BREW-enabled handset models in the market
  • 7 network operators on 4 continents with commercial BREW-based service ? Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in South Korea, KDDI in Japan, China Unicom, VIVO (the joint venture between Telefónica Móviles and Portugal Telecom) in Brazil and Telstra in Australia.

"When Qualcomm announced the BREW platform just over two years ago, we talked about creating a solution that would make the wireless Internet truly useful to consumers," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, president, Qualcomm Wireless&Internet Group. "Since then, the BREW solution has been instrumental in fueling the wireless data marketplace. BREW developers have earned millions of dollars through the virtual global marketplace that we have created and users worldwide are rapidly adopting next-generation wireless services based on BREW. BREW has emerged as the key ingredient in the data strategy of the leading network operators and handset manufacturers and as the cornerstone tool for developers."

"BREW has emerged as a leading platform for deploying advanced applications and services on next generation wireless handsets," said Sarah Kim, analyst, mobile/wireless technologies, Yankee Group. "The BREW solution will continue to offer operators and developers progressively robust capabilities for application development, execution, billing and revenue distribution."

Inspiring Innovation
Qualcomm's growing alliance of developers ? who create everything from entertainment and game applications to messaging and information tools - have lauded the BREW solution for its business and technological advantages over other wireless application platforms.

"None of the solutions for Java that companies have pieced together so far, is as powerful or as complete as the BREW solution," said Jason Devitt, chief executive officer of Vindigo. "I predict that in the United States in 2003, BREW applications will make four times more revenue than Java applications."

"BREW has given us a great way to cost-effectively grow," said Carolynne Schloeder, executive vice president of Faith West. "In addition to our U.S. partnership with Verizon Wireless, we're also working with BREW operators around the world, including Telstra and its local partners to bring ModTones to the Australian market. The BREW virtual marketplace gives developers a feasible means to approach international companies as potential partners, enabling them to grow their businesses and expand their product offerings. BREW has helped us bring it all together, and in the process we have found that BREW is snowballing. It is an important part of our success, and we are very happy we chose to develop on BREW. It's been great."

"Qualcomm has helped us develop and foster relationships with operators," said Oliver Miao, co-founder and CEO of Centerscore. "BREW has provided us an end-to-end solution that has served as a deep resource for us throughout our growth process, and the BREW Distribution System offers us a total business solution that has set us up for success by enabling us to make up our development costs in no time."

Qualcomm's BREW solution is a complete product and business system for the development and over-the-air deployment of data services on wireless devices. The BREW solution provides the necessary tools and value-added services to developers, device manufacturers and wireless operators for application development and distribution, device configuration, and billing and payment.
