Qualcomm Announces World's First WCDMA/GSM Calls Using Direct Conversion Dual-Mode Chipset

SAN DIEGO -- June 6, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the world's first live WCDMA (aka UMTS) and GSM calls using Qualcomm's complete radioOne™ direct conversion RF dual-mode solution. The calls, placed on June 3, 2002, used a Qualcomm test mobile featuring the highly integrated MSM6200™ Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset solution, which consists of the MSM6200 UMTS/GSM/GPRS baseband modem, RFL6200™ and RFR6200™ WCDMA receivers, RTR6200™ GSM transceiver with WCDMA transmitter, and PM6050™ power management device.

"These calls represent the world's first multimode, multiband wireless phone calls made on a handset with a single-integrated, dual-mode, direct-conversion chipset, a milestone that will help the industry bring small-form-factor multimode devices to market more quickly, with reduced bill of materials and lower total cost," said Don Schrock, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "The MSM6200 chipset and system software is the first in a family of products that will enable wireless manufacturers and carriers to deliver on the promise of 3G UMTS."

The MSM6200 chipset solution, on schedule for sample shipping in September 2002, supports WCDMA at 2100 MHz, Extended GSM (EGSM) at 900 MHz and Digital Cellular System (DCS) at 1800 MHz.

Qualcomm's radioOne Zero Intermediate Frequency (Zero IF) architecture eliminates the need for all IF components - including IF integrated circuits (ICs), IF Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters and IF voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) - thereby reducing printed circuit board (PCB) area and bill-of-materials for future wireless handsets and other devices, enabling more cost-effective multimode, multiband handsets.

The MSM6200 solution is compatible with the Wireless Internet Launchpad™ suite of advanced technologies and software, including Bluetooth™ connectivity capabilities, and multimedia features such as Qtunes™ Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG-1) Layer-3 (MP3) player software support and Compact Media Extension (CMX™) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia software. In addition to offering these features, the MSM6200 chips support Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) applications platform. The MSM6200 solution is also compatible with Qualcomm's MGP6200™ Multimode Global Positioning System (GPS) Processor and system software, providing industry-leading Wireless Assisted GPS™ capabilities. The MGP6200 solution supports WCDMA as well as GSM and GPRS systems. The MGP6200 chip uses the proven Assisted GPS fast-convolution hardware core and software algorithms from SnapTrack™, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, to provide significantly enhanced GPS signal sensitivity, fast start times, multipath mitigation, and power optimization, while minimizing positioning data traffic on wireless networks.
