Press Release

Qualcomm's BREW Platform Continues to Attract Device Manufacturers and Developers

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that it has signed non-binding memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with two additional device manufacturers interested in the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) applications platform. Hanwha and Synertek join a growing list of manufacturers planning to port the BREW application execution environment to wireless handheld devices. The BREW platform benefits manufacturers by accelerating their time to market and helping them easily differentiate their products with customized applications.

"With the availability of commercial BREW-enabled services approaching in the next few months, OEMs understand the significance of introducing BREW-enabled devices," said Gina Lombardi, senior vice president of marketing, product management and OEM relations, Qualcomm Internet Services. "Manufacturers using the BREW platform also face far fewer internal application development and integration challenges. We are excited about these two great companies joining many other device makers, carriers and developers working with Qualcomm on the BREW initiative."

More than 3,300 developers have downloaded the free BREW Software Development KitTM (SDK) since its introduction on May 14, 2001. The following wireless application developers join a long list of developers that have previously announced they are creating applications to run on the BREW platform:

  • Design and Animation - REZN8
  • Wireless E-mail and Internet Applications and Services - OmniSky
  • Financial Services - Mobilians
  • Location-Based - Portable Internet
  • Situation-sensitive Services - Transient Wireless Technology, Inc.
  • Solutions for End-to-End Embedded Applications - IBM
  • Wireless Strategic Consulting - Brauning
