Qualcomm's BREW Platform Receives 2001 CDMA Industry Achievement Award for Innovative Solutions

SAN DIEGO -- June 14, 2001 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that its Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) platform has been awarded the 2001 CDMA Industry Achievement Award for Innovative Solutions. This was awarded by the CDMA Development Group (CDG) during the 6th Annual CDMA World Congress in Hong Kong this week. Qualcomm's BREW platform was recognized for its significant contribution towards the advancement of wireless technology and CDMA networks. The BREW platform is developed and supported by Qualcomm Internet Services (QIS), a division of Qualcomm focusing on wireless Internet applications and services deployment.

The BREW platform is a thin applications environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform allows rapid development of a wide variety of applications that users will be able to download from carrier networks over the air onto any BREW-enabled phone.

Before the BREW platform, wireless handset applications were tied to specific handset models and software development was virtually closed to third-party software developers. With the BREW platform as a standard programming environment, software developers can simply integrate their applications to the BREW platform once, effectively eliminating the need to modify applications for each new device model.

"Qualcomm deserves to be applauded for its efforts in accelerating the adoption of useful wireless Internet applications and services on CDMA networks worldwide," said Perry La Forge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group. "CDG recognizes the contribution Qualcomm is making to the improvement of CDMA services through its development and deployment of the BREW platform."

"We appreciate CDG's recognition of Qualcomm's efforts in providing a platform for the creation and execution of compelling, useful software and services," said Paul Jacobs, executive vice president of Qualcomm.

BREW services are scheduled to be commercially launched by the end of 2001. Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF) in Korea, KDDI in Japan and Verizon Wireless in the United States will be the first carriers to roll out BREW services.
