What you should know:
  • The Dragonwing FWA Gen 6 Elite Platform converges a Release 19-ready Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF, integrated non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities and tri-band Wi-Fi 8 with a dedicated NPU to extend intelligent broadband beyond traditional network limits.
  • Agentic AI inside the modem senses and predicts real RF and network conditions to adapt connectivity strategies, while integrated NR-NTN/NB-NTN support broadens reach to rural areas, airplanes, boats and other remote locations.
  • The platform gives operators and OEMs a foundation to expand broadband access today while building a flexible, future-facing path toward 6G.

Broadband has become essential infrastructure for how people work, learn, access services and connect. Yet extending high-speed access to every location can remain costly and complex. Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) gives operators another way to deliver broadband by using 5G spectrum and wireless customer-premises equipment instead of relying only on a wired last mile.

The next generation of FWA must do more than deliver faster peak rates. It must intelligently manage changing radio conditions, use spectrum efficiently, support always-on gateways, distribute capacity throughout the home or business, and extend connectivity into places that terrestrial networks do not consistently reach.

The Dragonwing FWA Gen 6 Elite Platform is built around the Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF, integrated non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities and tri-band Wi-Fi 8 with a dedicated NPU that is designed to address that broader opportunity. Together, these technologies can connect the wide-area 5G link, satellite-enabled reach and local Wi-Fi network into a more complete broadband platform.

Release 19 readiness helps build the path toward 6G

The Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF is built on a 3GPP Release 19-ready architecture designed to help lay the technical foundation for 6G. For gateway and CPE designs, this forward-looking architecture brings greater spectrum flexibility and a path to higher-performance broadband experiences as networks continue to evolve.

Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF supports up to 500 MHz of aggregated bandwidth, 6-layer and 8-layer MIMO, peak download speeds of up to 14.8 Gbps across FR1 and FR2, peak FR1 download speeds up to 13.1 Gbps and peak upload speeds up to 4.2 Gbps. Actual performance will vary by network, spectrum, device design and deployment conditions, but the underlying capabilities give operators and OEMs a strong foundation for premium residential and business broadband.

The architecture also incorporates a third-generation 6Rx design (6 receiver antennas) for smartphones and FWA CPEs, along with advanced uplink and carrier aggregation capabilities. These innovations are important for FWA because a high-quality broadband experience depends on more than downlink speed.

Agentic AI in the modem: intelligence that keeps FWA connectivity moving

FWA gateways operate in environments that change from moment to moment. Congestion, interference, antenna conditions, mobility in the surrounding network and application traffic can all influence performance.

Powered by the fifth-generation Qualcomm 5G AI Processor, Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF introduces agentic AI capabilities within the modem. The platform is designed to sense and predict real RF and network conditions, then adapt connectivity strategies accordingly. Supported use cases include congestion detection and mitigation, traffic classification and prioritization, dynamic antenna management, data-stall recovery and smoother transitions between 5G and Wi-Fi.

For FWA, this intelligence can help the gateway make smarter connectivity decisions at the network edge, supporting responsive experiences across video conferencing, streaming, gaming, cloud productivity and emerging AI applications.

NTN extends FWA beyond terrestrial boundaries

Terrestrial 5G remains the primary connection for FWA, but non-terrestrial networks can broaden what a wireless broadband platform is able to support. Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF integrates advanced satellite communications with support for NR-NTN and NB-NTN, along with RF front-end support for NTN bands.

NR-NTN is designed for richer satellite services including video, voice and data, while NB-NTN addresses lower-bandwidth services such as messaging and basic data. In an FWA context, these capabilities can create new options for locations beyond consistent terrestrial coverage and for scenarios where an additional communication path is valuable such as rural areas, airplanes, boats, and other remote locations without cellular coverage.

Potential applications include remote or difficult-to-reach sites, temporary deployments, service continuity and emergency communications. Service availability will depend on final device design, supported spectrum and RF components, satellite partners, operator deployment and local regulations.

How Wi-Fi 8 distributes broadband capacity across the home and business

The cellular link is only one part of the FWA experience. Once broadband reaches the gateway, Wi-Fi becomes the connection users experience across laptops, televisions, phones, cameras, smart-home devices and business endpoints.

This next-generation FWA platform combines Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF cellular connectivity with a tri-band Wi-Fi 8 system based on a 5x5 radio architecture with a dedicated NPU. The design is intended to bring high capacity, lower latency, improved efficiency, on-device inferencing, and more consistent connectivity across the local network. Support for simultaneous and alternating multi-link operation, adaptive interference puncturing, OFDMA and multi-user MIMO can help the gateway use available spectrum more effectively across demanding, multi-device environments.

This converged architecture creates an opportunity to optimize the complete experience from the mobile network, through the FWA CPE, and across the Wi-Fi network inside the home, small business or enterprise.

Always-on gateways: engineering FWA for sustained performance

FWA gateways are expected to stay connected and perform consistently for long periods, making efficiency and thermal design critical considerations.

Those improvements can give device makers more flexibility to design compact indoor gateways, outdoor CPEs and integrated broadband systems while helping address thermal constraints and sustained performance.

By converging a Release 19-ready modem architecture, AI, NTN and Wi-Fi 8, this next-generation FWA platform can support residential and small-business broadband, remote sites, rapid or temporary deployments, resilient communication designs and premium gateways serving many Wi-Fi devices.

Building a future where FWA connectivity has fewer limits

The future of FWA will be shaped by more than raw modem speed. It will require intelligent connectivity across the wide-area network, the local premises and increasingly, non-terrestrial networks.

The Dragonwing FWA Gen 6 Elite Platform combines a Release 19-ready architecture that helps lay the foundation for 6G with high-performance carrier aggregation, advanced MIMO, agentic AI and integrated NTN support, paired with tri-band Wi-Fi 8 designed to deliver fast, responsive, efficient and farther-reaching broadband experiences.

For operators and OEMs, that convergence creates an opportunity to expand broadband access today while building a flexible, future-facing foundation for the path toward 6G.
