I have this habit where every time I go on my phone, even if it is with a specific purpose, I have to check Outlook, Teams, my personal email, text messages, WhatsApp, X, LinkedIn, Instagram and then Snap — every time, in that order and all of that it just on my smartphone. My digital “day in the life” also includes my laptop where I toggle between Outlook, Teams and Copilot. I don’t wear a watch, but I do have Meta Ray-Ban glasses and I also speak to Gemini a lot in the car while I’m on the road. Plus, there’s all the other apps that I call up daily: Spotify, my interval timer and chess.com, to name a few.
Like me, I think most of us by midmorning, have toggled between various apps and devices enough times to lose count. That’s just how quickly our lives move. And when you take stock of all of it a pattern emerges: we spend a remarkable amount of energy adapting to our technology. We remember which app holds which conversation. We manually shuttle context from one device to the next. We repeat ourselves to each new tool as if it has never met us before.
The next era of AI is about a shift in how intelligence works. Until now, most people have experienced AI as something they actively open, prompt and consult. But the next phase is agentic: AI that can understand context, coordinate across devices and take action (with permission) on your behalf.
