IDC: Android to Top Tablet Market by 2015

Apple’s iPad is the best-selling tablet on the market, by far. But according to research firm IDC, that might be changing by 2015 when Android tablet sales take the lead.

PC World chronicles how IDC’s predictions might come true. Less-expensive Android tablets such as the Kindle Fire ($199) have sold well, giving them a foothold in the market.

This doesn’t mean that Apple’s sales are plummeting. Quite the opposite -- the company's sales keep going up. The tablet market is just growing and expanding in new ways.  PC World and IDC point out that worldwide tablet shipments increased by 155% from 2010 to 2011. There’s more to come in 2012—IDC is predicting a 276% increase!

If Android does become the dominant tablet type, it will echo its growth in smartphones. Like tablets, the smartphone market is soaring. And Android has acquired most market share of any mobile OS: 42.8%, according to researcher Nielsen.
